Lois Smith Obituary

East Lyme - Lois M. Smith, 81, of Scott Road, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2025 in Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born July 21, 1944, in Bridgeport, the daughter of Arthur and Doris MacVeigh. She married her husband Jerome Smith May 15, 1965. They had one child, their loving son Christopher Daniel.

Lois graduated from Waterford High School, then worked her whole adult life holding many occupations. Her most near and dear-to-her-heart was as a Home Health aide. Her genuine care and love for her patients was truly her passion.

Nothing, however, could compare with the love and compassion and fierce nurturing she had for her family. Her baking and cooking skills were enjoyed by us all and gave her such joy. Having us all over as loud as can be was just perfect. A Christmas with Nonni could never be beat! Monthly Sunday breakfasts were a holiday! And as much as she loved her home, she loved to dress up and go out with her sweetheart husband of 60 years and wear her fanciest pair of shoes and purse to match with sparkly jewelry to show her glow! "Mama, Nonni, GiGi, sister and friend to many, you will be missed."

Mrs. Smith is survived by her loving husband Jerome "Jerry;" and son Chris (Donna) Smith of New London; her cherished grandchildren: Dylan (Whitney), Logan (Samantha), Ryan (Kaylee) Smith; and the apples of her eyes, and littlest loves, great-grandchildren: Juliana, Grace Ann and Owen Jerome Smith (Dylan and Whitney). Lois also leaves behind beloved siblings, Jane Schenking and Douglas MacVeigh (Pat); also, sisters-in-law, JoAnne Van Batenburg, Louise Smith and Monica Knaff; brothers-in-law, John F. Smith (Pat), Charles Smith (Diana) and Joseph Smith (Teri). Lois is also survived by many nephews and nieces whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by brothers-in-law, James Schenking, Maurice Smith, James Smith and Scott Van Batenburg.
