Marc Goldsmith Obituary

New London - Born in Elmira, N.Y., Marc Harris Goldsmith (Jan. 8, 1944 - Sept. 19, 2025) could have taken any number of paths but fate and passion led him to New London, where he would embark on a 57-year career at Mitchell College.

During his time there, he held many titles but was probably best known as "friend." To everyone. Marc was selflessly and endlessly dedicated to Mitchell College eventually guiding the school into Division III, as a four-year institution.

A scratch golfer, he became a favorite ringer to round out a foursome during best ball tournaments.

His passion for education and equality led him to a volunteer career as an editor during which he received, among others, a prestigious award from the NAACP.

Perhaps the pinnacle of his achievements, as he would tell you, was marrying the love of his life and his soulmate, Terri Goldsmith.

Marc was also a gifted singer, guitarist, musician, storyteller, Eagle Scout – you name it. Whether playing guitar in Upstate New York with professional acts (Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, and many more) or playing in the Temple Emanu-El band, he would always be found swinging along and singing whether he was taking the lead or a supporting role.

Marc is survived by his two sons and three grandchildren: Zachary Isaac Goldsmith, an attorney in Connecticut and David Matthew Goldsmith, a principal in New Hampshire; as well as his grandchildren, Rose Goldsmith, Asa Goldsmith and Mila Harper Goldsmith

Professor Goldsmith was a fantastic professor when I had him at Mitchell College. I enjoyed Comm & Conflict and Persuasion Class during the 2020-2021 semester. We developed a close friendship during that time at the college. I knew Goldsmith as a mentor, role model, and a good person who enjoyed our conversations in class. He and I had a close friendship until I graduated. May he rest in sweet peace.

Professor Goldsmith will be honestly missed. He was an incredible professor, not only with his wits, but also with everything he knew. I had a really good connection with Professor Goldsmith as he and I grew closer during my college career. It´s so sad to hear he has passed, but his legacy will live on forever.
