Marcelle Phyllis Levine

Mystic - Marcelle Phyllis Levine died on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

She was born April 2, 1925, in New London, a daughter to Leon Benn Dorsky and Jessie (Friedman) Dorsky. She was married to Sheldon H. Levine in Feb., 1947. She filled her life with volunteering, reading, travel, and studying.

After graduating from Williams Memorial Institute and Mount Holyoke College, she attended Mitchell College, Connecticut College, Arizona State University, and Rio Salado Community College.

Her lifelong commitment to volunteer work began during World War II as a member of the Women's Auxiliary Nursing Service (WANS) at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, and later followed for over 28 years as a volunteer at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich and at Del Webb Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz. She was active in Girl Scouting as a troop leader, leader trainer and troop organizer. She also spent time in Cub and Boy Scouting, Red Cross Blood Program, and teaching American Cancer Society Road to Recovery and many years as a museum docent in Arizona.

Mrs. Levine served on the Backus hospital executive board, the local Red Cross board, the West Valley Arizona museum board of directors, and as president of the Backus auxiliary 1974-1976. She was a member of Temple Emanu-El, Waterford.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Leonard A., of Mystic and Robert A., M.D. and wife, Rebecca, M.D., of Nashua, N.H.; four grandchildren, Eric, Bryan, Daniel, and Jessica Levine; also a sister, Naomi D. Jaivin and her husband, Lewis, of New London.

Burial will be private, for family members only.

The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
