Michael Granata Obituary

New London - Michael J. Granata, 61, of New London passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side July 3, 2020. He was born July 29, 1958, in New London the son of the late Russell and Carmella (Vocalina) Granata.

Mike grew up in New London and graduated from New London High School, class of 1977. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, MMA fights and the casinos. He worked at Pfizer, Electric Boat and 23 years with the State of Connecticut DOT retiring in 2011.

He is survived by his son, Mathew and wife Courtney Caulfield; his fiancée Cindy Knapp; a brother, Anthony and wife Susan Granata; sister, Carol and husband Daniel Kramer; and nephews, Daniel, and Jeffery Kramer.

His good will, and funny humor will be sadly missed by his family, friends and especially his two American Eskimo, Russell-Bear and Bella. He is a "HERO" in our hearts for the courageous battle that he fought in the last year of his life fighting this unforgiving and relentless disease.

Special thanks to, Dr. Jason Haldas, and staff at Smilow Cancer Center in Waterford. Donations in his memory to Eskie Rescuers United, or charity, of their choice.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Broad Street, New London.

The Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Avenue, New London, has been entrusted with his care.

Mikey, I don't care how many the years; I miss you every day. I miss your phone calls, your laughter, calling me Bon Bon. I still listen to your vm on my phone. I can't do yard work without thinking of you. Everytime I see a butterfly, I know it's you. A trip back to CT isn't complete without a couple new red flowers and some FL shells for your grave. You stole my heart Michael and that will never die. I would give anything for you to still be here. I love you forever my sweet friend.

Our weekly phone calls; checking-in to make certain our son's, my mom, our dogs were happy, safe, well. What did you do this week? We talked about food; of course, both Italian. Hands down, Mike the far better cook. I never had a brother. I told Mike, if I could pick a brother, for sure, it would be someone just like you. Mike always had a calm in the darkest hours, thoughts to reflect on until the next phone call, passionate for those he loved, his devotion to St. Jude; like myself. We hoped to meet in New York City for the Feast of St. Gennero; then, diagnosis, treatment plan revealed. He hoped to travel to Italy someday. Asked about my favorite regions of Italy. I miss our weekly conversations; be it 15 minutes; an hour. A sweet dear soul, taken way too soon. It's not right, no longer to hear your voice, so on this particular day I could wish you "buon compleanno amico mio..."

I remember the day we met when you came to pick up Russell Bear. I could not only see but feel the joy in your heart and I knew he was blessed to have you as his Dad. I am sure you are hanging near the Rainbow Bridge waiting for him, Titan and Bella to join you one day. God's speed Mike.

I met Michael in second grade when I first moved up here from New York. He was the first to become one of my friends and throughout life I was lucky enough to run into him at Electric Boat out and about in town. He was a great guy with a great smile and a great sense of humor and will be sadly missed by all. I sent my dearest sympathy to his wife and family and may you find comfort in knowing hes in a better place and at peace.
