Michael Vogel Obituary
He is survived by his brother, Aaron.
A 2005 graduate of Westerly High School, Mike served as a U.S. Marine for six years and participated in the 2007 Troop Surge in Al-Anbar, Iraq, responsible for route clearance as a turret-gunner and for Armory NCOs. He left active duty as a sergeant to return to college. In January of 2011, he graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, summa cum laude, and was named the David Warren International Relations Scholar of the year. He was an intern within the Strategy and Policy Department at the U.S. Naval War College and the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. In 2011, Mike was the recipient of a Robertson Fellowship Scholarship, pursuing a master's degree of International Affairs at Texas A&M University.
Mike also leaves behind grandmother, Sandra Lawton; aunt and uncle, Wayne and Karen Vogel, aunt, Barbara Lawton; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many, many friends.
His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, RI 02891. Funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Christ Episcopal Church, corner of Elm and Broad Sts., Westerly. Burial with full military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, A reception will follow at the Westerly Yacht Club, One Watch Hill Road, Westerly.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.org

It is an honor to be acquainted with Michael; to know of his accomplishments, and his ambitions. Michael will be with us for many years and be valued for his leadership and wisdom. Our experience, as Michael well knows, is one of our best teachers. As he transitions to a new mission, the experience he leaves for us, though difficult, will make us all wiser and more passionate for the causes that burned in him.

Donna, Gary and Aaron,
Although it has been years since we have seen you, the house you lived in is a constant reminder that we were once neighbors. I will always remember Michael's beautiful eyes and the freckles on his face when he was a little kid. We raised our boys together when they were young, so, we share many of the same memories.
We are so sad to hear of Michael's passing and can only imagine the grief you are suffering. May your family and friends help you get through this most difficult time. We hope that as each day passes that you see less of a shadow and more of the sun.
