He was born in Taiwan on Feb. 8, 1954 to Dr. and Mrs. Jinray Yu. He traveled to many countries as a child including Libya, Malta, Germany, Italy, and Egypt. He was a 1973 graduate of St. Bernard High School. After obtaining three undergraduate degrees from Three Rivers Community College he attended and graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1981.
He served in the United States Army and became a United States citizen in 1977. Morris was a well respected and valued employee of the Department of Children and Family.
He was married on May 15, 1976 to Karen Marie Vivirito. He has two daughters, Jennifer and Emily. Morris was also loved by his mother, Carolyn, sister, Jenny, twin brother, Jonathan (Frank) and his wife, Tara, nephew, Justin and niece, Casey and her husband, Josh, their son Matthew and son-in-law, Adam Almond. He will be fondly remembered by the Kanabis, Vivirito and Francisconi families, especially his father-in-law, John Kanabis, nieces, Katie Francisconi and Mara Strader and nephew, John Michael Francisconi.
Morris was an avid reader with a seeking spirit for knowledge. He encouraged everyone to pursue higher education. He was a talented photographer and Karate instructor. He never missed a UConn basketball game on TV. He was definitely one of their biggest fans. He loved eating dim sum in Chinatown. SGI activities in the practice of Nichiren Daishonin Buddism were a big part of his life. Spending time with his family was what Morris valued the most. Family cook-outs, birthday celebrations, music, movies and dancing were special in his heart.
In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to Charter Oak Bank, c/o Emily Yu College Fund, 3 Boston Post Road, Waterford, CT 06385.
The family will receive friends for a memorial gathering on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will be private.

Although I only worked with him for a little over a year, Morris left a really positive impression on me. It was evident that he put his heart and soul into the work he did, and he was dedicated to helping others. My thoughts and prayers are with the Yu family.

Dear Karen,Jenny, Johnathan and families,
I worked with Jenny for 10 years. I didn't know Morris, but I became friends with Jenny and Johnathan. I wanted to send my heartfelt condolences, thoughts, prayers and love. Listening to Jenny, Morris was a wonderful man. I'm so sorry for your loss. This is such a hard time losing someone so special that I wanted to let you all know how much I care, and how much I wish I could take all the pain and sorrow away. If ever you need to talk, please know that I lost both my parents to cancer, and I know that it is so hard, if you ever need me I will be there!
Love always,
