Groton Long Point - Patrick D. Mahoney Sr., 62, loving husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family Feb. 1, 2025.
Born in Philadelphia, March 3, 1962, Patrick was the eldest of five children born to the late Dr. James C. and Teresa (Kelly) Mahoney and the first grandchild of Irish immigrants. He spent his youth in York, Pa., graduating from York Catholic High School in 1980 and from Saint Joseph's University in 1984.
Fueled by oral histories passed down from his grandparents, Patrick soon developed a passion for genealogy. Patrick took great delight in traveling with his children across the U.S. and Ireland to piece historic records with his grandparents' stories. Patrick often cited examples of courage, resiliency, and perseverance from his ancestors, applying them to challenges he faced in his own life and as examples for his children.
Patrick began his own chapter in family history in the summer of 1990, when he reconnected with childhood family friend, Lesley Carroll. After five months and countless hours of driving between York and Boston, Patrick proposed marrying in 1991. Settling in New Rochelle, N.Y., they soon welcomed four children, each of whom he was enormously proud of and loved dearly.
While Patrick's career led their family to various places, he described Groton Long Point as the one constant throughout their lives. A seaside community where Lesley spent her childhood summers, "GLP" became the central station for the whole family.
Patrick found additional personal fulfillment throughout his career. After serving as an aide and speech writer for the Mayor of Philadelphia, Patrick pursued opportunities in sales and marketing. Patrick started in York's manufacturing sector, later earning senior management positions across a long tenure with Standard & Poor's. He was awarded four patents in the U.S., Canada, and UK. Patrick accepted C-suite positions at industry associations in New Jersey and New York, ultimately finding his true professional calling as CEO to the Financial Planning Association (FPA) in Denver, Colo.
Patrick served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister in every parish he joined and was a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and the American Society of Association Executives. Patrick served on the Board of Directors for FPA, McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, Enders Island, and Saint Joseph's University's Board of Trustees.
Patrick is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lesley (Carroll) Mahoney; and their children, Grace A. (Shannon) Mahoney, Olivia M. (Nicholas) Mahoney, Madeleine A. Mahoney, and Patrick D. (Arianna) Mahoney Jr. He is also survived by his siblings and countless friends.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Rd in Groton. His burial will follow the mass at St. Michael Cemetery on Stillman Ave. Ext. in Pawcatuck.
