Penelope Parr Obituary

Stonington - Stonington Times columnist, Penelope "Penny" S. Parr, 91, of Stonington, wife of the late W. Grant Parr, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at home with her family at her side.

Born in Pasadena, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Paul and Penelope (Bixby) Stevens. She broke ground at the New York Daily News as a female journalist and columnist during and after World War II.

She married Grant Parr and traveled the world as a diplomat's wife, eventually retiring to Cadaques, Spain.

In 1981, she purchased her Harboredge residence in Stonington Borough. Still active in her late 80s, she started the Stonington Times column, "From the Harbor's Edge," commenting on local events, people, and culture spiced with her unique international perspective.

Penny is survived by her two children, Julia E. Parr of London, U.K., and W. Stevens Parr of North Stonington.

Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, followed by a service at 4 p.m. at The Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic.
