Peter Anderson Obituary

Groton - Peter R Anderson, of Groton and Bozrah, beloved husband of Deborah (Caprilozzi) Anderson, father of Leif S Anderson, of Bozrah, Jesse R Anderson of Arvada, Colo. and stepfather of Heather M. Leniart of Norwich, died peacefully June 28, 2019 at Backus hospital after a brave struggle with cancer.

He was born in New London Aug. 2 1954, to Edward E and Joan E (Thurston) Anderson.

Peter graduated from St Bernard High in 1972 and studied literature at UCONN Avery Point. He was employed as a supervisor at Millstone, a clerk at the New London Post Office and worked as a roofer, retiring from the United Roofers Local Union 9.

Ever proud of his Norwegian heritage, some of his fondest memories were spending time with his father and Norwegian grandfather in the late 60s building the family cottage in Maine.

Peter was a voracious reader who enjoyed biographies and history. One always walked away learning some interesting tidbit or history lesson from him.

His love for lively debate prompted many letters to the editor of the New London Day paper, Sports Illustrated and the Old Farmer's Almanac. He was always up to date on current events, despite being (proudly) internet free. He was a staunch Red Sox fan and coached the Bozrah little and senior league baseball teams. He was well known by many in his community as 'Mr. Anderson'.

Even in difficult times, his quick wit and humor were unmatched.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his mother, Joan Cavanaugh of Mystic; six grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and 12 siblings, Zoe Anderson, of Brenouille, France, Adrienne Anderson of Rocky Hill, Jane Anderson of Danbury, Kristine Anderson of Santa Rosa, Calif., Carol Robbins of Stonington, Mary Anderson of Block Island, R.I., Anita Anderson Charlestown, R.I., Margo Padon of Spokane, Wash., Laura Anderson of Chaplin, Calif, Eileen Anderson of Burbank, Calif., Edward Anderson of Needham, Mass. and Brian Anderson of Jackson Heights, N.Y. He was predeceased by his father Edward E Anderson; and his sister Judith K Anderson. Peter will be missed dearly by family and friends.

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 06360.

Peter was a youngster at the New London Post Office when I first met him and his other school friends, some who stayed and made a career in the PO. My memories of Peter are happy and pleasant as he a tremendous sense of humor and he gave as good as he got from the oldsters such as myself. I would run into Peter from time to time as his sons were the same age as my youngest as they were involved in high school sports also. I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and Peter will forever be fondly remembered. I offer my apologies for not attending the wake as a serious family health matter arose and I had to respond to that. Rest in peace my friend,

I worked with Pete at New London PO, when I first started in the mid 1970's. He made a new hire feel right at home! He was very funny and an all around happy person. God Bless.

Pete I enjoyed knowing you even Briefly! It was so kind of you to bring the article of tThe Mischevious Carrot and a wonderful reminder of our years with minimal responsibility. I am sorry your last couple of years were spent trying to regain your health, I can only hope your Spirit is now in a weightless realm where you only have Joy!
