Phyllis Hyman Obituary

Norwich - Phyllis Idell (Wynn) Hyman, 94, formerly of Plymouth Avenue West in Groton, entered eternal rest March 31, 2021, at Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center.

Phyllis was born May 10, 1926, in Powellsville, N.C., to Martha (Perry) Wynn and General Washington Wynn Jr. Phyllis graduated from C.G. White High School in 1943, where she was voted most athletic by her peers. In 1948, Phyllis relocated to Norfolk, Va., where she worked as a mail clerk at the Naval Station in Norfolk. In 1956, Phyllis married James Edward Hyman, with whom she had one child, James "Ronnie" Hyman.

In 1961, Phyllis moved to Groton with James, who had been transferred to the Naval Submarine Base. Phyllis would go on to work as a clerk in the Management Services Division at the Naval Submarine Medical Center until her retirement in 1986.

Upon arriving in Connecticut, Phyllis became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, which was then under the pastoral ministry of the late Reverend Albert Garvin. Phyllis was known by other church members for her delectable cakes, which she almost always brought to the church for weddings, funerals or simply at the request of other members. This led others at Shiloh to lovingly call her "The Cake Lady", a title that Phyllis wore with pride.

Throughout her life, Phyllis was an avid bowler and traveled the nation competing in various bowling tournaments. Phyllis would later share her love of bowling with her grandsons, ensuring that she was always present at their bowling matches and bringing them to numerous bowling tournaments.

Phyllis is survived by her son, James Hyman and his wife, Donna Henry of Norwich; and two grandchildren, Dylan Hyman and his fiancée, Laurel Pierotti of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Phillip Hyman of Norwich. Phyllis is also survived by her younger sister, Martha Cherry of Ossining, N.Y. Phyllis leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, and other extended family whom she loves dearly. Phyllis was predeceased by her three sisters, Mary-Francis Bass, Elretta Moore, and Ira Green; as well as two brothers, Paul and Cyrus Wynn.

Phyllis' family will receive friends and family at 10 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2021, at the Lester Gee Funeral Home, 108 Blinman Street, New London. A graveside homegoing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, 184 Salem Turnpike, Norwich. Bishop Benjamin K. Watts, DMin, will be officiating. Memories and care are entrusted to the Lester Gee Funeral Home, New London.

Phyllis was a wonderful person. We meet her many years ago when she lived in Groton. Wonderful cook, especially her fried chicken and delicious cakes. Sending heartfelt sympathy to her family and friends.
Sincerely, John & Donna Mortensen
