Phyllis Stevenson Obituary

Niantic - Phyllis Ann Stevenson, born May 2, 1938, to her loving parents Elieen and Fred Jones, passed gracefully into heaven Aug. 10, 2023. She was surrounded by her children, Sheila, Bobby and Angela, and daughter-in-law Ania, her grandchildren and the love of her family and many friends as she entered into the perfect peace. Married to her beloved husband, Robert Arnold Stevenson Jr., Nov. 19, 1960, she was widowed Nov. 8, 2012, and longed to be with him once again in the embrace of God.

Phyllis took great joy in her ten grandchildren: Jennifer, Andrea, Mary, Johnny, Leah, Allesondra, Sofia, Viktor, Nathaniel and Bobby by sharing their endless adventures in life.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in education at Westfield State Teachers College in 1960, and worked as an elementary and pre-school teacher until her retirement in 1996. Known to her young students as "Miss Phyllis," she was especially happy while head teacher at Robin's Nest Nursery School, teaching and helping form generations of young children living in and around Niantic.

Phyllis cherished her friends and entertaining at all of the holidays; her Christmas Eve party in particular being the highlight each year. She also enjoyed frequent travelling with her husband Bob, whether by motorcycle, car or plane to Canada, Florida, Scotland, and Italy; all a long way from her family roots in West Springfield, MA.

A devoted parishioner for nearly 60 years at Saint Agnes Church in Niantic, Phyllis was active in the church from teaching the Catechism in the 1970s, to being a serving member of the bereavement committee until she passed. Her final wishes were in lieu of flowers, to please make a donation to Saint Agnes Church in support of their good works.

Phyllis will be Waked from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Thomas Neilan Funeral Home in Niantic. A Catholic Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in Saint Agnes Church, followed by Interment at Union Cemetery in Niantic.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your mom. She was one of the first people to welcome me to St Agnes when I moved here 8 years ago. I often sat with her and her good friend Phyllis at many masses. I´ll always remember her sweet smile and warm personality. May she rest in the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Sally Ann Tanasi
