Groton - Richard Dean Elliott, FTCM, USN (RET), 97, of Groton, passed away peacefully Nov. 24, 2025, with his granddaughter Danielle by his side. A devoted husband, father, veteran, and friend, Richard will be remembered for his humility, generosity and steadfast dedication to those around him.
He was born June 8, 1928, in Point Marion, Pa., the son of Samuel A. and Florence Virgin Elliott.
Richard grew up with a strong sense of service and family. In 1945, at the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy, embarking on what would become a distinguished 25-year career beneath the waves as a submariner and electronics specialist. Rising through the ranks, Richard retired in 1970, as a master chief petty officer. He was a veteran of the Submarine Service in World War II, Korea and the Viet Nam wars and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, as well as several Good Conduct awards. He earned the respect and admiration of his fellow sailors through his quiet leadership and unwavering integrity.
In 1946, Richard married the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth Burd. Together they shared a marriage that spanned decades, built on love, laughter and shared devotion to family.
After retiring from the Navy, Richard started a second career with S.N.E.T., where he worked for another 20 years, applying the same diligence and skill that had defined his military service.
Outside of work, Richard was a passionate bowler and an avid NASCAR fan. He was a member of Fleet Reserve, Branch 20, the Groton Lodge of Elks, and an at large member of the American Legion. He was deeply connected to his community, volunteering to install Life Alert Systems and teaching computer classes at the Groton Senior Center, where his patience and good humor touched many lives.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; and their daughter Diana Scovish; a brother, James Elliott; a sister, Mildred Gasbarre; and his great-grandson Tyler Siano. He is survived by his son Richard Elliott Jr. and wife Rebecca; son-in-law James Scovish; grandchildren: Danielle, Jennifer, Benjamin and Chase; as well as several great-grandchildren; and a community who will long remember him as a "a great guy."
