Richard Brian Mooney

Groton - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Brian Mooney, who left us Oct. 29, 2025.

Richard was born in Baltimore, Md., March 8, 1959, raised in Pennsylvania, and lived a life that can only be described as extraordinary. A man with nine lives, he faced every challenge with strength, resilience and humor. He was brilliant, able to calculate the square root of any number off the top of his head and tell you exactly where you were by a mile marker on any highway.

Known for his sharp wit, sarcasm, and perfectly timed inappropriate humor, Richard could make anyone laugh. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 22 years, achieving the rank of chief petty officer (E-7). During his service, he traveled the world and served aboard the USS Narwhal (SSN-671) and the USS Springfield (SSN-761). He also proudly served with the White House Communications Agency, supporting Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Later, he shared his vast knowledge as an instructor at the Naval Submarine School, mentoring the next generation of submariners.

Even after his military service, Richard never stopped learning. He worked hard to earn his bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University, a milestone that made his family deeply proud.

Beyond his accomplishments, Richard was a loving father and husband who taught his children to be strong, independent, and, in true Mooney fashion, a little stubborn. He had a passion for cooking and baking, his legendary cheesecakes, piled high with fresh fruit, and his chili recipes will remain family favorites for generations to come.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Richard loved bowling, hockey, football and golf. His favorite teams were the Philadelphia Flyers and the Eagles, and he proudly supported them through every season. He collected sports memorabilia, bowled multiple perfect 300 games, and played hockey growing up, a sport that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He also shared a deep bond with his beloved dog, Walter, who continues to keep his memory close.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Julia M. (Lindenmeyer) Mooney and John F. Mooney Sr. Richard is survived by his wife: Cristen Rebmann; his children: Ryan Mooney, Megan Carter, Erin Impellizeri, his step-children: Michael Grzincic, Marybeth Peret and Melissa Woolley; his grandchildren: Kathryn Mooney, Benjamin Mooney and Mackenzie Carter; and his siblings: Patricia Stanley Lackman, John F. Mooney Jr., and Robert Mooney.

He will be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family. Though his body has rested, his humor, strength and love will echo in our hearts forever.

Private services will be held at a later date with close family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans organization in Richard's memory.
