Richard Ravenelle Obituary

Groton - Richard H. Ravenelle Sr., 90, of Buddington Road, Groton, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, April 23, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Norma Gaudet Ravenelle, only 95 days prior to his passing. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert L. Ravenelle April 23, 2020. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Richard H. Ravenelle Jr. (Andrea) of Florida, Nancy Skaggs (James) of Ledyard, and Marsha Van Dyne (Robert) of Voluntown; his grandchildren, Meghan, Mallory, Eric and Katie; and his great-grandchildren, Jayden, Myah, Nathan, Jaxson, Ally, and Vivi.

Richard was born in Mystic Dec. 11, 1931, to Louis H. Ravenelle and Edna Sharkey Ravenelle. Shortly after graduating Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in 1950, Richard asked his highschool sweetheart to marry him. He and Norma wed on Sept. 1, 1951, and dedicated over 70 loving years of marriage to building a beautiful life together with cherished family and friends.

During his career, Richard was a dutiful employee of Hewes-Sweet Oil Company in Groton and City Coal–now known as DDLC–in New London where he retired. As an exceptionally active man, Richard enjoyed spending his free time taking his grandchildren fishing, bowling and golfing with friends, gardening in his backyard, or working on cars. His adventurous spirit brought his family across the country, exploring American treasures like the Grand Canyon and the Redwood Forest in their camper. Richard will always be remembered for his contagious smile and ceaseless demonstrations of true chivalry.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Simphiwe Mbele, who cared for both Norma and Richard during their final days. Her endless support and compassion helped the entire family through this very emotional time and bridged true friendship between the two. Furthermore, the family would like to personally thank those at Masonicare Home Health and Hospice for their unwavering support: Linda S., K.C., Shay G., Julia R., Susan B., Jennifer P., Kate S., Sara D., Aaron O., Ronnie R., Michaela W., Jenn R., and Michelle T.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Contributions can be made in his memory to Masonicare Home Health and Hospice.
