Ronald Caviness Obituary

Montville - Ronald "Butch" Caviness Jr., 57, of 509 Norwich-New London Turnpike, Uncasville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his home.

Butch was born on Aug. 6, 1956, in Englewood, N.J., the first of three children to the late Ronald Sr. and Mildred (Shumpert) Caviness.

Butch moved to Connecticut in 1974 and attended Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in Groton. There he met his wife of 25 years, Debbie (Robinson) Caviness. Butch and Debbie soon started a family and moved to Oakdale in 1985. Later, Butch would earn a degree in business administration from the University of New Haven.

For many years, Butch worked as a supervisor of non-destructive testing inspectors at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton. Most recently, he worked as a security officer at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

As a loving father of three, he worked tirelessly to provide his children with a great life. His finest quality was his patience: an inherent ability to listen, to absorb, and to offer a point of view based on quiet, measured wisdom. Butch was a serious and quiet man, but he could never resist the opportunity to have a laugh with friends and loved ones. He was often happiest when left to his own devices - whether it was a home improvement project, working on one of his cars, or falling asleep while watching a football game.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie; his two sons, Ronald Caviness III and his wife, Bridget, of Oakdale and Ryan Caviness and his wife, Jaselyn, of Canterbury; his daughter, Ashley Franklin and her husband, Richard, of Uncasville; four grandchildren, Teagan and Declan Caviness, Isabella Franklin, and Lilliana Caviness; his brothers, Jeffery and Steven Caviness of New Jersey; his aunt, Latese Williams of Groton; his sisters-in-law, Julie Robinson and Patricia Mcrae; and a host of loved ones.

Memorial calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 11 Jerome Road, Uncasville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, 374 Broad St., New London, CT 06320.
