Samuel Greene Obituary

Ledyard - In Loving Memory of Samuel "Sam" Halleck Greene Sr. Sam, a resident of Ledyard, unexpectedly passed away Dec. 18, 2023, after a prolonged battle with addiction. Born in New London, Aug. 10, 1976, Sam attended Fitch High School in Groton. His presence in the local community extended through his work as a landscaper, reflecting his love for the outdoors. Sam was a passionate sports enthusiast who found joy in discussing and listening to sports on the radio. His heart belonged to the Chicago Bears, New York Mets and Los Angeles Lakers. His enthusiasm reached its peak during the championship seasons of his beloved teams in 1985, 1986, and the early 2000s. Sam reveled in their triumphs, passionately cheering for iconic players such as Walter Payton, Mike Piazza, and Kobe Bryant.

Sam is survived by his wife Lesley Caulkins of Norwich; and his son Samuel Greene Jr. of Ledyard; his parents, Dianne Halleck-Strycharz and Edward Strycharz of Ledyard; and his sister Helen (John) Vennari of Pawcatuck. Sam's impact extended to the next generation through his nephew Logan Vennari; and niece Aurora Vennari, both of Pawcatuck.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street. Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Norwich. There are no visiting hours. As we remember Sam's life, let us not only reflect on the challenges he faced but also celebrate the passions that brought him joy. His love for sports, was a vibrant aspect of his character, and left an indelible mark on those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to organizations supporting addiction recovery, acknowledging the challenges Sam faced and the broader impact of addiction on individuals and their loved ones. Together, let us honor Sam's memory by contributing to the support and resources critical to those battling addiction. You were a dad to me and gave me the best little brother I could ever imagine. Your impact on my life as a little girl was greater than I think many people realized. You bought me my first kitten, man did that make me happy. You taught me how to eat a sandwich without getting mayo all over my cheeks haha. I'm going to miss you and I promise to be there for Junior whenever he needs me. I love you always. And if anything good came out of this, I'm glad you're no longer struggling. Until we meet again ❤

Thank you so much for sharing the story of Sam, and his struggles with addiction. Too often we are left to "assume " and I am so grateful you are sharing his story for the community. Addiction touches us all. It is not an ugly little secret, it affects every member of our society. So sorry for your immeasurable loss off a beloved son, brother, father, husband, uncle, nephew, friend. And thank your for showing us a multilayered man, lost to a terrible disease.
