He was born in Shelton on May 10, 1918, a son of the late Wasil and Eva Prokopczak Kowtko.
Samuel faithfully served his country in the Army during World War II, taking part in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and South Pacific Campaigns. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. Upon returning to the area Samuel met his wife Julianna and they married on June 7, 1947. He worked as a machinist for U.S. Motors in Milford and later for Viking Tool in Shelton, retiring in 1983. A 45 year resident of Seymour, Samuel was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ansonia, the Seymour Father's Club, American Russian Citizens Club and the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed watching sports.
Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Pudim and her husband, Donald, of Niantic; sisters, Ann Black of Arlington, Texas, and Helen Eaton, of Lakeland, Fla.; grandsons, Jason Pudim, of San Diego, Calif., and Michael Pudim, of Astoria, N.Y.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Kowtko, and a sister, Mary Skurat.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ansonia. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Sts Peter and Paul Cemetery in Derby. Friends may call on Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Hylwa Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia.
