Shirley Josephson Obituary

Gales Ferry - Shirley Ann Josephson, 75, of Gales Ferry, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

Shirley was born Nov. 7, 1946, in New London, the daughter of Charles A. Curtis Jr. and Ann Christophersen Curtis.

She worked hard for 37 years as a civilian secretary for the Navy, finally retiring this year, at age 75. Family tried to convince her to retire earlier but she just said, "knock it off;" she liked working.

Shirley was a devout, loving mother to her three children. She enjoyed scrapbooking, gardening and bird watching. She was quiet sometimes but very down-to-earth and easy going.

She was a member of the Groton Bible Chapel and had great care and concern for the suffering of others. Even while going through suffering of her own near the end, she was quick to tell us to pray for hurricane and flood victims and starving children she would see on TV. While having a particularly rough time in the ER one night, she still took the time to gently pat the shoulder of an attending nurse.

Shirley is survived by two children, Diane Stigers and Brian Josephson; grandson Jason Stigers and his wife Katherine; great-grandson Theo Stigers; and sister Deborah Curtis. She was preceded in death by daughter Pauline Josephson Shook; and son-in-law Carsten Stigers.

She will be greatly missed by her family, but we know we will see her again.

A Graveside Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Jordan Cemetery, Boston Post Road in Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to American Red Cross, 209 Farmington Avenue, Farmington, CT 06032.

I am so glad to have known Shirley. Even though I had not seen her in a couple decades, I can still remember the sound of her voice. She was such a cool and fun person. I am glad we were in the same group of people being baptized, along with her sister, Deb. I look forward to seeing her again!

My condolences to Ms. Shirley family and friends. I was opportune to work with her at the navy base for few months before retiring. She was very hardworking and ready to learn new things. She also loves the Golden Girls show and she will ask me if I know the casts on the show. I will smile and we'll both laugh about it. She will always say good night ma'am see you tomorrow after we have had a long day at work. She was sweet and kind. I miss her after she retired but will miss her more now that she's resting. Rest well Ms. Shirley.

Shirl was like a sister to me for so many years. I have countless fond memories of fun times with her -- meeting for a drink at the Montville Polish Club, going to Ocean Beach, driving around aimlessly just to chat, having yum dinners at her house (in Montville, at the time). May loving remembrances of her comfort Deb, Diane and Brian, and the rest of the family, at this time.

My grandma Shirley was always a quite and reserved woman. But behind closed doors she was quite funny and enjoyed family gatherings with everyone around. Gonna miss you grandma

Mom, I'm so glad we had this past year together to get to know each other again. You were patient with us, compassionate and had the perfect amount of feistiness. I only wish we had had more time. But I will see you again. I love you and miss you and love seeing your smile on the obituary picture. Love, your daughter Diane
