Theodore Klein Obituary

Norwich - The Reverend Theodore J. Klein, Ph.D., retired priest of the Diocese of Norwich, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, in Mystic. He was 81.

Father Klein's life was devoted to serving his country and faithfully serving the Catholic Church. Following a distinguished career as captain in the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Service, Father Klein answered the call to become a Catholic priest at age 40. As both pastor and educator, Father Klein is fondly remembered as a gifted, caring, and joyful priest. He had been Pastor of St. Mary, Mother of our Redeemer Parish in Groton, for many years before retiring from St. Mary in 1999.

Father Klein was born in Kings Park, Long Island, N.Y., May 15, 1928, son of the late Paul W. and Marian A. Klein. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, N.Y., a master of arts degree at Georgetown University, and a Ph.D. in international relations from the School of International Service at American University in Washington, D.C.

Father Klein prepared for his ordination at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, and completed his studies for the priesthood at Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass. He was ordained a priest for service in the Diocese of Norwich by Richard Cardinal Cushing, the late Archbishop of Boston, in Holy Cross Cathedral on May 21, 1969. Shortly following his ordination, Father Klein began sharing his knowledge and spiritual guidance as a teacher at Notre Dame High School for Girls in Norwich and later at the then St. Bernard Boys High School in Uncasville.

Always generous with his time, Father Klein additionally served on many committees and commissions of importance to the diocese. Several such assignments include serving 18 years as Ecumenical Officer of the Diocese, two terms with the Connecticut Conference of Catholic Bishops, and chairman of the Diocesan Medical Ethics Committee.

When time permitted, he loved to travel. He frequently led students and parishioners on pilgrimages to the Holy Land and always held a special fondness for Scotland and Ireland, the home of his ancestors.

Father Klein was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth A. Podgorski and Marie E. Kovarik, and by a brother, Paul W. Klein.

He is survived by six nieces and nephews, Francis T. Podgorski, Judith M. Boaree, Barbara P. Dalzell, Albert F. Kovarik, Barbara J. Isoldi, and Tracy Klein.

The Transfer of the Body to St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton, will take place at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. Following that ceremony, Father Klein's body will lie in state from 3 until 7 p.m. at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church. A Parish Mass will be celebrated for his repose at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in St. Mary's Church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.

The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic is handling the arrangements.

Fr. Klein was a dear friend to our family and we spent many wonderful evenings with him. He came to Austria to Marry Annemarie and I in a mass in the Basilika in Wilten . He was a dear family friend, a teacher, and just a wonderful person. We in the Geibel family still miss talking with him.

We were Father Klein's first marriage at St. Mary's Mother of the Redeemer Church. He often reminded us of that little known fact from time to time. Who could ever forget sitting at the Mystic Drawbridge waiting for the bridge to go down, glancing over at Bee Bee's Diary, as he sat there in the window, having breakfast. You always knew your day would be alright knowing that as predictible as he was, like his faith, steadfast. Heaven rejoices with his presence.

The community has lost a gentle, compasionate and intelligent man. He was a wonderful pastor who made his homilies so enriching and mass a very spiritual experience. He gave the sacrament of the sick to my son when he had a near fatal accident and from that point, I knew everything would be alright and my son would survive. Thank you Fr. Klein.

My family first met Fr. Klein when he was assigned to St. Patricks Church in Mystic. When he later became Pastor of St. Mary, Mother of Our Redeemer Parish in Groton my family started to attend mass there. He was a wonderful person, we enjoyed taking him out for lunch and listening to his many military stories when serving in the Air Force. He will be greatly missed by evryone.

FATHER KLEIN WAS A DEDICATED PRIEST AND A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING. WE WERE VERY FOND OF FATHER KLEIN, RESPECTED HIM GREATLY,AND ALWAYS FOUND HIM TO BE VERY INTELLIGENT AND EXTREMELY FAIR-MINDED. FATHER KLEIN NOT ONLY VISITED OUR ELDERLY AUNT ON FIRST FRIDAYS, BUT ALSO MARRIED TWO OF OUR CHILDREN. HE PARTICULARLY ENJOYED OUR DAUGHTER'S RECEPTION AT THE MYSTIC AQUARIUM. FATHER KLEIN WILL LIVE ON IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS, AND WE EXTEND OUR SYMPATHY TO HIS ENTIRE FAMILY.

I had the privilege of serving as Organist for Fr. Klein and the people of St. Mary at the 5:30 Saturday mass for 15 years. It was a pleasure to work with Fr. Klein who was a man of integrity. He showed a reverance for the mass and demonstrated respect for every aspect of the church. He will be greatly missed.

The world lost a true friend, but heaven gained another angel. We'll miss you, Father Klein, and especially we'll miss your kind smile and gentle eyes. Mass always felt like a true celebration in your presence.

With sad but grateful hearts, we remember a keenly sensitive pastor, a highly intelligent individual, a truly gentle man, whose carefully chosen vocabulary and thoughtfulness made both sermons and articles anything but mundane. You never left his presence without feeling enriched, and his absence now leaves all of us the poorer. Mary & the John Dempsey Family

We got to know Fr. Klein in the early 70's. He and I being former Air Force had helped our friendship. When we moved away we would try to visit him when we came back to spend time with family.

finds a treasure." Sirach 6: 14
Fr. Klein was that treasure.
