Vincent DeAngelis Obituary

Naples, Fla. - Vincent Paul DeAngelis, 77, husband of Kathleen Sheflott DeAngelis for 55 years, passed away Nov. 17, 2022. He was born in New London, the youngest son of Dr. Louis and Mae DeAngelis. He is predeceased by his sister Clarissa. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his sons, Matthew of California, Peter and his wife Deborah of Waterford, and Adam and his wife Ni of Michigan; and three grandchildren, Paul, Lyra and Vincent.

He became an Eagle Scout while in grade school at St. Joseph's in New London, and later attended Saint Bernard High School in New London. He had perfect attendance all four years and received 11 varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Paul played basketball in college before graduating from St. Francis College (now University of New England) in Biddeford, Maine earning a BA degree, and then a ME degree from Eastern Connecticut State University.

Paul taught history and was chairperson of the social studies department at Griswold HS where he also served as assistant football coach and head coach of basketball, cross country and track. In the three years as head basketball coach at Griswold HS, he won three division titles qualifying for states each year. He then took the head basketball coaching position at Thames Valley Community College for four years, with a 53-3 league record, winning the Connecticut small conference championship each of those years. In his seven years of head coaching, his teams attained a .938 winning percentage. After retiring from coaching, he refereed basketball and umpired softball. Paul took up running, biking and swimming, competing in numerous marathons, biathlons and triathlons across the country.

After 15 years of teaching, he moved on to work as a nuclear inspector, auditor, senior instructor, safety administrator and Manager of Safety & Health at Millstone Nuclear Power Station, often called, "The Mayor of Millstone," as he made his rounds. He attempted retirement, but it didn't take, so he then worked as Safety Manager for Cannon Sline, followed by the Thames Shipyard. He was also a Medic First Aid instructor and OSHA instructor, and authored safety policy and procedures for numerous companies.

A Celebration of Life event will be scheduled with family and friends at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to the Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) or the Jimmy Fund (https://danafarber.jimmyfund.org). DeAngelis family,
I am sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I hadn't seen him since I was a kid as both he & Sis were quite a bit older than me. My father, Pete Plourde knew your father from coaching football at St Bernard's. I read Paul's obituary to him and he remembered him which is quite a feat at 94. Sis, Paul, Dr & Mrs "D" were all part of our family growing up.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Mr. DeAngelis taught World History at Griswold High School in 1970. He was always well prepared and gave thorough classroom lectures. Since he was a member of the Griswold High School coaching staff, I thought he would likely give an athlete such as myself a break when it came to grading. No such luck--he did everything by the book. I haven't seen Mr. DeAngelis in 45 years. Seeing his obituary sadden me. My condolences to his family.

Dear Kathy:

So sad to hear about Paul's passing. I left a message on
his tribute page but I'm not sure if it got posted. I had
the pleasure of coaching Paul in basketball and football. He was a gifted athlete and very coachable during those
years at St. Bernard's. We were able to keep in touch over
the years and I often spoke with him when we met up
at Planet Fitness in Waterford. I want you to know that I
am keeping Paul, you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. We all lost a good one!

Mr "D" was one of my favorite teachers in Highschool. Personable, funny and witty. I learned to love history as a result of being his student. It is so strange to learn he was only 10 years older than me; which means he was pretty new at this teaching thing, but he was effective. I have never forgotten him or his class. My condolences to his wife, children and family.

Paul helped make me the athlete( All State football player) and coach I am today, I started coaching in 1974 and am still coaching and working at G.H.S. today. He taught me to be agressive and smart in every sport he coached me in. His coaching legacy will live on because it is instilled in me. So sorry for you loss! But his Greatest accomplishments are his GREAT family.

I send my condolences to Kathy and family for the loss of their dear husband and father. I remember Mr. "D" as a teacher at Griswold High School. He made history come alive. I later got to know him more personally when he coached for my husband´s basketball team at Thames Valley. He was a great guy.
