William Coon Obituary

Preston - William Edwin Coon, 87, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 20, 2024. He was at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Stonington, June 17, 1937 to Edna Mae Burdick and William Henry Coon Jr., the family would later settle in Preston, where he would spend the rest of his life.

The family became known for Spicer Hill Farm, where they sold vegetables and flowers.

William is survived by his wife Diane Mae Coon. He also leaves behind a sister, Barbara Chester, of Norwich. William was predeceased by sisters, Doris Crouch and Marguerite Bruno; and a brother, John A. Coon.

On Feb. 6, 1959, William married the love of his life, Diane Mae Stanley, with whom he shared a rich life raising three children, Timothy Coon of Preston, Lynn Egan of Southampton, N.Y., and Christen Fotta of Plymouth, Mass. He took immense pride in his ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, who will always remember

his big heart, endless teasing and advice to "work hard."

After briefly attending trade school, William went to work operating a bulldozer and soon purchased his own truck and backhoe, founding Coon Construction in 1958, a business that has thrived for over 60 years and continues today as William Coon & Son. In his younger years, William enjoyed competing in horse-pulling and spending time with friends at the Waterford Speedbowl. Known for both his generosity and sharp wit, he and Diane opened their home to friends, neighbors and co-workers, sharing meals and shooting the breeze. His strong presence in Preston extended to numerous volunteer projects where he lent his skills to town projects, reflecting his deep commitment to the community. Though William eventually stepped back from operating machinery, he continued to oversee the daily operations from his truck and could be seen every morning at the "pit" holding morning meetings with his friends and colleagues.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his loyal caregivers and to Hartford Healthcare Hospice at Home for their compassionate support.

At the request of the family, a graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Preston Historical Society.

The Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home, Jewett City, has been entrusted with the private arrangements. For online condolences please go to www.gagnefuneralhome.com.

Billy was well known and liked by our family. His teasing was endless on the job site and the other contractors always enjoyed his jabs. He gave as good as he got. He will be missed.

I just want to say I´m very sorry. He was my dad´s best friend,I met Mr. Coon (Bill) years ago when my dad was alive and he was a wonderful kind generous man. Diane was a beautiful woman her and her husband Bill had a beautiful home and their hats were bigger than the house.
I´m so sorry for your loss.
My condolences from me and my late father Sam Campo.

I remember when I needed some site work done. In 1974. My surveyor, Dick Mansfield said, why don't you call this young Billy Coon? He does a great job and will treat you right. I did, and used him for 40 years. He was a great guy and his wife Diane was a wonderful lady.
