William Edmonstone Obituary

Mystic - William Mason Edmonstone, a retired physician and longtime resident of Mystic, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at StoneRidge Retirement Community. Sally, his wife of 70 years, and several family members were at his bedside.

Dr. Edmonstone was born on May 17, 1917, in Hyde Park, Mass., and educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University, and the University of Rochester Medical School. His medical training was interrupted by World War II, where he served as a captain in the Second Armored Division as it progressed toward Berlin. After the war, Dr. Edmonstone pursued additional postgraduate training at Harvard Medical School and then completed his residency at Hartford Hospital.

In July of 1949, he opened a practice in Mystic. In 1961, he recruited his first partner, Richard M. Barry, M.D., established the Mystic Medical Center on Sandy Hollow Road and was later joined by Edwin Sproul, M.D., Howard Brensilver, M.D., James Sullivan, M.D., and Thomas Blum, M.D. He retired in 1985.

Dr. Edmonstone's fondest memories were of the early years when he learned about the people and geography of the area while making house calls with only a "black bag" and stethoscope. Going into people's homes, hearing their stories, and often accepting bartered goods as payment (farm fresh eggs, lobsters, oil paintings and firewood are examples) moved him deeply.

In addition to his wife, Sally, he is survived by three children; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter born earlier this year.

He was predeceased by a son, Peter M. Edmonstone, in 2006.

A memorial service including remembrances will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at StoneRidge Retirement Community in Mystic. All are welcome to come and share their memories.

We lived in Mystic and I remember looking forward to going to the Dr's house! Many warm memories of his kindness- my mom adored him and so did we as children.

We would like to send our deep sympathy to the Edmontone family. Dr. Edmontone was a wonderful doctor for both of us as children. His warm smile and sincere way always impressed us as children and later as adults. May God bless and comfort you during this time of grief. Sincerely, Duncan and Lolly Stoddard

Sorry for your loss.

I have very fond memories of Dr. Edmonstone. He was a caring man, who was a friend of, and cared for my father, also a physician. A few years ago I ran into him at Avalon, where he would come to visit his friends from Stoneridge who were staying there. He remembered me and my family which was such a nice feeling. My sympathies to the family for your loss. Susan Fagan Reardon
