Captain Smith was my boss at CCGDONE (di), - District Inspection Office. I admired him greatly. He was a kind and considerate soul and mentor, and I was proud to have known him.

Wee made my senior life with CGA 53 a joy by insisting that "once a member of '53 always a member" although I didn't graduate with the class, keeping me as the class bugler for all reunions. Wee, I hope you can hear me render Taps for you and the rest of our class on this memorial weekend.

WE was the dear leader of CGA53, who famously decreed that if you were ever a member of our class, you were always a member! Thanks, WE!

Dear Smith family, Please accept Carol's and my condolences for your loss. I served with Capt Smith as his SK1 on CGC Dallas 75-76. The words Honor and Integrity describe him. He was the finest man I ever served under. I was able to tell him that prior to my retirement in 1993. It was an honor sailing with him. Rest In Peace Capt. Smith.

I served with CAPT Smith on CGC Dallas as RM1, '74-'76, including OpSail '76, escorting HMY Britannia during Queen Elizabeth's visit. CAPT Smith provided great leadership to our crew and personal encouragement while I was trying to cope with domestic issues. He took an interest in my career, urging me to apply for OCS, while I studied for RMC and CWO exams. He instilled study habits and a work ethic that helped me through retirement. He may be called "Wee", but he's the epitome of a CG CAPT to me. May you continue to be blessed with fair winds and following seas, sir!

This is a GREAT man in every aspect of life. His depth of character was matched only by his love of family and I mean his USCGA family. He lived to serve..and he served to live. His passion for life as an Academy graduate was evident at all his career and retirement positions. He made the ACADEMY a better place and his dedication to the corps values of the Academy mission were both passionate and unparalleled! What a legacy you left us! Thank you my friend and mentor!

A true gentleman. Inspiring in his support during my tenure as the 39th USCGA Superintendent. Mentored, coached, and loved so many. His love for God, his family, the Coast Guard, and USCGA gave him a bright light that was a joy to watch and follow. Go Captain Smith! Go Wee! Go Class of 1953! Go Bears!

Wee always told me I could not pre-decease him because I had to be here to play Taps for him - so here I am, playing out toward Arlington National Cemetery, dedicated to Wee and other recently departed CGA53 classmates. Best friends always, our band of brothers.

Wee did gain fame as an ardent supporter of the Class of 53. So much so, that other classes wanted to adopt him! Ralph and Diane Hill
