Donald Woodbury Obituary

Donald Sturgis Woodbury, Sr., 93, longtime Byfield resident, passed quietly at The Meadows Health center at Edgewood in North Andover.

He was the beloved husband of the late Jane (Mann) Woodbury, who passed on May 4, 2011.

Born in Beverly on November 21, 1922, he was the son of the late Percy and Bertha (Cottle) Woodbury and was a graduate of Salem High School and Bentley College.

After retiring from a successful 27 year career at General Electric, Don embarked on his second calling as a real estate investor and manager, acquiring properties around the New England area. He served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the Salem/Beverly area during the time of WWII, was a member of the National Association of Accountants (IMA), served as a Notary Public, was a member of the Newburyport Lions Club, and a Rotary Club member.

In his retirement, he and his wife, Jane, traveled extensively from Australia to Great Britain. They then put down winter roots in Palm Springs, California where family and friends visited often.

He is survived by his son, Donald S. Woodbury, Jr. and partner George Labovites of Marblehead; daughter, Susan J. Bates and husband James of Rockport; daughter, Abigail M. Woodbury of Brookline; son, Mark Woodbury and wife Tara of Byfield; his grandsons, Andrew, Daniel, and Michael; his sister-in-law, Shirley Mann Creesy, and several nieces and nephews. His outgoing personality and inquisitive nature netted him lifelong friends from near and far. And his enthusiasm, kindness and loyalty made him beloved.

Funeral services will be held at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport on Saturday April 9, 2016 at 9:30 A.M.

Following the services, everyone is invited to attend the reception in the Church Hall. Burial at the Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead, will be at 1pm. The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Central Congregational Church, Post Office Box 372, Newburyport, MA 01950 or the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack Street, Lawrence, MA 01843. Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.

Don's visits to chat with my Mother during her stay at the Meadows were terrific! He always had something interesting to say and would help the time to pass with purpose.

I will remember him fondly.

My thoughts are with you and your families on the passing of your dad. At the times when I was able to meet him, he was always kind, and took an interest in what I was doing.

May you have comfort in the memories of his life and number of people that he touched.

I knew Don from The Meadows at Edgewood where my mom, Jackie Little resides. Don was a warm, welcoming soul. He greeted every new resident as they came in. He was caring and concerned when folks fell ill or passed away. He brought tremendous joy to the dining table each night, singing 'Hail, Hail the Gang's All Here', announcing the sunrise/sunset and temperatures for the day, and asking enlightening trivia questions. Don was quite the entertainer! I enjoyed playing games of checkers with him (he did NOT like to lose), and enjoyed our interesting conversations. We called him "The Mayor of the Meadows". He enjoyed his pink Canada mints which I found for him online one day and surprised him with a 2 lb. package delivered to his room. Don was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by all.
