Jean Charroin Martin

90, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2011, in Poway, CA. She was born Jean Adelaide Charroin on May 8, 1920 in Seattle, WA, the elder daughter of Julia Nathalie McCarty and Arthur Byron Charroin. She grew up in San Diego, CA, attended San Diego High School, earned a B.A. degree from USC and was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She married her college sweetheart, Dr, Wilbur O. (Smokey) Martin in 1942, and as a Navy bride she worked at Lockheed Burbank. The couple raised their daughters in the San Fernando Valley where Smokey had his dental practice. Jean was very active in the Episcopal Church, the Republican Party, and several charitable and service organizations. She was especially dedicated to the Mary Duque Guild of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. The couple later retired to Rancho Mirage, CA, and Jean recently followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jean was preceded in death by her beloved Smokey in 1998. She is survived by daughters Pamela Ruehrdanz of Palm Desert, CA, Gayle (Al) Guglielmo of Poway, CA, Tracy (Jeffrey) Hahn of Manhattan Beach, CA and honorary daughter Janet Goodine of Huntington, IN; sister Joanne Carr of San Diego, CA, niece Camille Adams of St. Simons Island, GA; five grandchildren, Martin Arnest, Matthew Arnest, Danielle McCutcheon, Whitney Stephenson, and Carter Hahn; and five great-grandchildren. Family inurnment and prayers will be held March 26 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, CA.
