John Duerr Obituary
- - Blaine died June 8, 2019, in the Intensive Care Unit at Desert Hospital due to sepsis. He was 68. With him were his sister Susan Duerr Sloan and brother-in-law Jay Sloan. Blaine was born in New Martinsville, WVA, on May 9, 1951, the son of the late Richard U. Duerr and Virginia Highland Duerr. Blaine graduated from Mercersburg Academy and Syracuse University, majoring in Business Administration. He worked at the Onondaga Savings Bank where he met his partner Jack Schloeder. He then served as the manager of Syracuse University's Carrier Dome Sports Center for a number of years. Blaine and Jack moved to Palm Springs in 1993 where they operated the Columns Resort. Following that, Blaine served as Executive Assistant to the owner and director of the Palm Springs Follies. The couple married in Los Angeles, October 2008. For the final six years of Jack's life, Blaine served as his dedicated caregiver. Blaine enjoyed traveling and studying the way large cities create innovative solutions. Blaine is survived by his sister Susan and her husband Jay; two nephews, Stephen and Stewart Sloan; and four great-nieces, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Nora, and Michaela. Blaine was cremated. His and Jack's ashes will be spread together on sacred ground. No formal services will be held however memories of Blaine may be sent to his sister via Wiefels-Palm Springs. Donations to a local hospice or charity healthcare center would be welcome.

My sincere condolences to the family of Blaine Duerr. Blaine was an amazing man. He was a very loving and giving man especially to his life partner, Jack. He will always have a special place in my heart because of his care and devotion to my dear classmate Jack. I knew Blaine when he live in Syracuse, NY. with Jack.
Thoughts are with the family during this very sad time.

I met Blaine when we both worked for the Office of Residential Life at Syracuse University. He introduced me to bringing a business perspective to the work that I did, even when I was a small cog in a big machine. I will always value the lessons I learned from Blaine, as well as his spirit and integrity.

I met Blaine in the 1990's when he was already living in Palm Springs. We had great wonderful conversations about NYS politics as I was living in NY at the time and working for the legislature. Conversation was always stimulating with him. Years later when I myself bought in Palm Springs and started to expand my real estate business here from Phoenix, I ran into him and he laughed when I told him that every time I see David Gergen on TV I think of him. Blaine had a quiet charm and humor, but above all I will remember his intelligence and the talks we had about politics.
