Jules Stein Obituary

7/2/18 - 9/13/09 Jules Walter Stein, beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend passed away September 13, 2009 in Reseda, Calif. after a long illness. Jules, a resident of Indian Wells, Calif. for 15 years, was born July 2, 1918 in New York to Walter J. and Dorothy (Dougherty) Stein. He held Electrical Engineering and Economics degrees from Franklin & Marshall and Allegheny Colleges (PA). He was a Major in the Army Corp of Engineers. He worked on the Manhattan Project during the 1940's in Oak Ridge, Tenn. during which time he negotiated elements of the first billion dollar budget with the U.S. Senate for Oak Ridge, was in charge of all telecommunications, and escorted President Roosevelt on a tour of that atomic bomb project site. In the late 1940's he moved his family of five to southern Texas where he worked on a coal gasification project to produce gas at $.08 a gallon. He again moved his family in 1955 to California where he was a successful electrical contractor. Later he developed a mobile home park in Texas. In recent times in the Coachella Valley he served on several boards for the benefit of the community. Jules enjoyed sailing, golf, chess, the Big Band Sounds, traveling, family gatherings and staying fit through swimming and weight lifting. An occasional trip to Laughlin or Lake Tahoe casinos was a particular treat. Jules is survived by his two sons, Robert and Patrick and their wives, Lenore and Cassandra; and daughter, Dorothy and her husband, Don; nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Dorothy (Jody), Jennifer (Miguel), Beth (Greg), Margaret (Ari), Nicholas, Walter, Ilene (Kurt), Darlene; and 16 great-grandchildren. Jules was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother and wives. Jules will be missed by many but the traditions that he established will be carried forward in his family.
