Nicholas Dillon Obituary

Nicholas R. Dillon, December 30,1927 - July 18, 2007 Nicholas "Nick" Ronald Dillon, 79, beloved father and friend, passed away on July 18, 2007 at his home in Palm Springs. He was one of ten children born to Nicholas and Mildred Dillon in Providence, Rhode Island. Nick retired from the United States Navy after twenty years of service to the greatest country in the world! His career began in the closing months of World War II and lasted into the Vietnam War. Tours of duty included Antarctica, Okinawa, New Zealand and many stateside postings. In 1970 Nick arrived in Palm Springs and began his career as a bartender and man about town at the El Mirador Hotel. Several "gigs" and many memorable moments later, he reluctantly retired from the bar business in 2001. Nick was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas, in 1988. He is survived by sons: Dan and Jimmy of Palm Springs; Matt of Reno, Nevada, daughter-in-law's: Sheere of Palm Springs and Molly of Reno, Nevada; five grandchildren: Cassie, Chivaun, Skyler, Maxx and Tarynn, sisters: Shiela Lauretta of Hawthorne, New Jersey and Louise McCullough of Bergen County, New Jersey, godson; Chase Welmas, his trusted and beloved confidante, Judy Haynes and countless dear friends. A celebration of Nick's life and spirit will be held August 4, 2007 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. at Leon's at the Canyon's, 1097 Murray Canyon Road, Palm Springs, Ca. Nick passionately loved animals, especially dogs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Palm Springs Humane Society or the charity of your choice. Palm Springs has lost one of its local legends and we are all the poorer for it. "WHO LOVES YA, BABY!"

They say they are closing this guest book in a couple of days. Never will my fond memories of my time with Nick Dillon be closed. I think about you often Nick. I even talk to you in my prayers. You impacted my life and so many others with many happy times. I have our "cocktails" painting hanging in a place where I see it often and always it gives me a smile. Thank you Nick....missing you....Valerie

My deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers. Below are the words shared with me when my Dad had to leave. I hope they bring peace to you as they did me.

PERHAPS GOD IS A poet

WHO WRITES WITH WORDS

OF FLESH AND BONE AND LEAF AND FLOWER.

EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY,

words POUR OUT OF THE POET'S HEART,

AND EVERY WORD IS beautiful

AND TRUE AND WORTH THE TELLING.

AND WHEN EACH

poem IS perfect,

AND THERE IS NO MORE WHICH OUGHT TO BE SAID,

THE poet GENTLY TAKES THE WORDS

BACK INTO HIS HEART,

WHERE THEY ARE SAFE forever...

AND THEN BEGINS AGAIN.

To know Nick Dillon was an experience in itself! He was truly a one of a kind and most unique individual. His exuberant and passionate love of life was well exhibited by his many friends and the 'very large' life he lived. The Palm Springs that I have come to know will always have a huge void with his absence. He was indeed a legend in his time and to this town. The sense of loss that I am feeling is tremendous but how fortunate I feel to have had the incomparable Nicky Dillon in my life for the time I did. My heartfelt sympathies go to his immediate and extended family. And, in his memorable words, "Keep the Faith".

To all Nick's family and friends, my sincere condolences. There's a noticable absence of an extraordinary presence in Palm Springs that will be take many years to fade. Palm Springs has had many legends over the years, but none greater than our remarkably unique and illustrious Nick Dillon. My favorite saying of his is: "You know, I've seen alot of beautiful women in my life, but I've never seen one as beautiful as you." He would change it up a bit when addressing a man. Nevertheless, Nick always made everyone feel special, one way or another. I am going to miss Nick each time I drive into town, and sometimes in between visits. See you soon....

The desert is truly a poorer place with your passing. One day all your friends will be with you again and I'm sure I will not be the first to say "Set em up again Nick and don't forget one for yourself. For now you are in our prayers.

Nick was a great friend to both my parents Fred and Claire Satterlee and myself. There were great days and times at the Ramada with Nick holding court over his band of friends and followers. "Who Loves ya Baby?" will stick in our hearts as a reminder of our friend Nick Dillion. Our sympathys to his family and loved ones.
