Payton Webb Obituary

Payton Randolph (Randy) Webb was born January 5, 1926 in Wilton, N.C. to George Webb Sr. and Eva Webb. He graduated from the local high school and shortly thereafter was inducted into the U.S. Army, after which he served for two years in Japan. After the war, Randy attended design school in Chicago, Ill. He then went to work for Louis G. Sherman Wholesale Furniture on Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles, which was to last his entire working career. When Mr. Sherman passed away in 1960, Randy and another employee were able to purchase the business from Mr. Sherman's widow. He first became acquainted with the Coachella Valley when he furnished homes here for Bob and Delores Hope and Gerald and Betty Ford. During the 1990's, Randy purchased a home in Portola Village, Palm Desert, and commuted here from his Santa Monica home. However, shortly after moving here full time in 2006, he was hospitalized with Parkinson's disease, and became a guest of Carlotta Nursing Home, where he remained until his death. Mr. Webb is survived by three brothers, George Webb, Jr., Robert G. Webb, and S. Wilton Webb, all of North Carolina. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews, most of whom also reside in North Carolina. Locally, he is survived by friends, Fred Guenthart, Henry Carasas, Janos Csikos and Victor R. David. He was preceded in death by A. De Wayne Bethany, Othnile Clifford, and Joe Pisciotta.

Mr. Webb lived across the street from my parent in Portola Village. He would always let us use his driveway for extra parking when he wasn't in town. He was extremely kind to my parents and always asked about their kids. My parents visited him in the hospital many times. They will miss him.
