Poul Steenild Moller
Bermuda Dunes - Poul Steenild Moller passed away, peacefully, at home in Bermuda Dunes on June 8.
Poul was born in Randers, Denmark on July 29th 1925 to Knud and Inger Moller. Raised on a farm with his sister and brother, he then spent the early years of his youth in ranch management. Thoughts of adventures in a new world led him to the USA as a foreign exchange student in 1952 and, after returning to Denmark, he immediately sought emigration papers to the US.
After traveling and working in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California, he settled in Palm Desert in 1955, and in the summer of 1959 returned to Denmark for a visit. There he met his future bride Birgit (Schiellerup) on a blind date and they married that year in Copenhagen.
Having started a successful business in garden irrigation in 1955, the business grew to include landscaping, retail sales of sprinkler equipment, landscape maintenance and golf course irrigation. Poul was very proud to have been involved in the development of many of the valley's golf courses along with his friend Johnny Dawson. This included Thunderbird Country Club, Eldorado, Indian Wells Country Club, Seven Lakes, Marrakesh Country Club, Ironwood and Desert Horizons.
In 1973, to Poul's great pride, Moller's Garden Center opened; the nursery grew to become a very successful part of the business community in the Coachella Valley. In his later years, Poul loved his daily visits to the nursery, sharing stories with customers and staff alike. He continued his daily participation in running the nursery until age 87, although he had turned the business over to his children in the late nineties
On the few days Poul was not at work he enjoyed traveling the western United States and on occasion South America. Camping, boating, hunting and fishing were always on the itinerary.
Poul loved the Coachella Valley and was always ready to support community activities, having sponsored many baseball teams, soccer teams and high school graduation ceremonies in addition to the many local charities, especially those that included children's needs. For many years, Poul also served on the board of Bank of Indio (now California Bank and Trust). Poul became a US citizen in 1972 and faithfully voted until the last election.
Poul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Birgit; his daughter, Karen; his son, Erik; daughter-in-law, Marti; two grandchildren, Kyle and Erin; and his sweet dog, Sunny. His older sister Grete and many nieces and nephews are also in Denmark.
Services will be private
