Berta Alvarez Reyes
Feb 25, 1942 - Mar 3, 2026
Berta Alvarez Reyes, 84, entered into eternal rest with the Lord on March 3, 2026. Born on February 25, 1942, in Caldwell, Texas, to Genaro and Amelia Alvarez, she was raised there before moving to Bryan, where she met her future husband, Sam Reyes.
Berta dedicated much of her life to caring for others. For many years, she ran a home daycare where she lovingly cared for many children, creating a home filled with warmth and kindness. Many of those children, now adults, still remember the time they spent with her before starting kindergarten and carry fond memories of their early years in her care. An active member of Saint Teresa Catholic Church, Berta participated in church groups and sang in the choir alongside her daughter for many years. She later became an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She was the beloved wife of Sam Reyes, who served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard. As a military wife, Berta supported her family through many moves across the country while raising their sons, Daniel and Ron, and working various jobs to help provide for the family. During their time in California, the family lived in a lighthouse in Avila Beach, a unique experience she often shared with family and friends. Later, she welcomed her daughter, Sandra, the youngest of their three children, and the two shared a special mother-daughter bond that remained strong throughout her life. In 1983, the family settled in Bryan, Texas, where they made their home.
Berta will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and valued member of her community. Her kindness, generosity, and the many lives she touched will always be cherished. Her home was always warm and welcoming, a place where family and friends were greeted with open arms.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Genaro and Amelia Alvarez; and her sisters, Francis, Teresa, and Patricia.
She is survived by her husband, Sam; her sons, Daniel and Ron and his wife Patricia; her daughter, Sandra and her husband, James; and her grandsons, Ryan, Brandon, and Josh.
Services were held on Monday, March 9, 2026. She was laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
