Chess Mizell Obituary

April 26, 1990 - February 15, 2013

Chess Ronald Mizell of Midland, Mich., passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 15, 2013 in College Station, Texas where he was attending Texas A&M University.

Funeral services for Chess will take place 10 a.m. Saturday, February 23, from the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Gaspeny officiating. Chess' family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and at the church on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

In addition to services in Midland, Chess will be honored at Silver Taps at Texas A&M campus in College Station on April 2, 2013. Silver Taps is a sacred tradition that Aggies hold dear.

Chess was born April 26, 1990 in Midland. He attended Blessed Sacrament grade school and Northeast Middle School. He graduated from Midland High with the Class of 2008 and was proud to be a Chemic. Chess then attended Michigan State University, and was currently completing his degree at Texas A&M. Chess was so excited that he would be presented with his "Aggie" ring in April of this year.

Chess was an avid sports enthusiast and focused his playing career on soccer. He played for the Midland Soccer Club, TNT Soccer in Lansing, Midland High and the Michigan State University club team. In 2007, Chess was named goalie for the Saginaw Valley Dream Team. He also found a love for lacrosse in high school. Chess' Mother lovingly documented through photography the years of soccer that Chess played, and the many fun things that he did with family and friends. Chess was also particularly proud of the several victories he had with his Dad in father-son golf events at the Midland Country Club.

Chess was a dedicated PC gamer, including WoW, Diablo II and others. He also loved Myth Busters and attended their recent show in Detroit with his Mom and Dad. He enjoyed adventure and spending time up north in Michigan with his mom and dear friends. During his studies in Environmental Sciences at Texas A&M, he found a passion for mitigating the effects of Climate Change. He was looking forward to being an Intern this summer in Dow's Environment, Health and Safety Remediation group. Chess had a great heart and was bestowed with a most beautiful smile. He will be remembered for his romantic optimism, love of white rice, crunchy mac and cheese and his gentle ways. We are all blessed to have been loved by him.

He was preceded in death by his grandpa Ronald Jeffrey and uncle Aaron Williamson.

Survivors include his parents, Michelle Jeffrey and Chess Mizell; grandparents, Martha Jeffrey and her husband Don Tuszynski and Chess and Patsy Mizell; and sister, Kayla Mizell. He is also survived by his stepmother, Kristen Mizell; stepsiblings, Kevin and Katherine; step-grandfather, Harold Kelley; aunt, Debbie (Jeffrey) Williamson; uncles, Patrick (Tara) Jeffrey, Dunn (Shelley) Mizell and Lee (Jamie) Mizell as well as several cousins. He also leaves behind his dear chocolate lab, Izzy, who we know will miss him so much. Chess also treasured the many dear friends he made throughout his life. They all had a special place in Chess' heart.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a scholarship that will be established for an environmental science major in Chess' name at Texas A&M University.

Chess,
Words cannot express the sorrow and sympathy that Jill and I and many, many folks are feeling for you and your family. At times like this, the only place to turn is to the comfort that comes from Christ. May you take solace in John 10:27-28: "My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they will never perish. No one can take them out of my hand." May God comfort and hold you in his loving arms and may you always treasure the times that you enjoyed with little Chess.

February 21, 2013

My dear friend Chess. As you know I just recently lost a very close and loved person and at this moment I do know the pain endured cannot be relieved, the loss can never be replaced, the memories can never be cast away; but with some amount of compassion, thoughtfulness, gentle words, one can surely help ease the pain. These condolence messages will help remind, that although death separates us from one another in body, in spirit, the person always remains alive. Alive through the kind words they said to us, the caring deeds they did for us, the lesson that they taught us, and the example that they were to us. Let us remember them in our prayers, in our fond memories, in our everyday actions, so that remembrance brings joy, not tears.
Be certain that I am with you and your family in thoughts and prayers as well our entire STO Tech Center Team.
Cyro Pecora, Jr.
