Retired Army Colonel Dennis H. Boerner, 81, passed away on November 19, 2016, in College Station, Texas. Born in Orange Grove, Texas, to the late Fred and Mary (Fey) Boerner, Dennis lived his life with wholehearted dedication to God, family and country.
After graduating from Orange Grove High School, Dennis attended St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Tx. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in Business and then started his long career as a young Army Lieutenant in 1956. Shortly after, Dennis married his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Maggie) Humes of Longview, Texas.
Dennis has served his country for 30 years, as an Army Artillery Officer, Aviator and Nuclear Chemical Target Analyst. Dennis was deployed twice to Vietnam, where he fought bravely as a helicopter pilot. He served additional overseas tours in Germany and Korea.
Dennis served at the Pentagon and while attending the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, he earned his Master's degree at The George Washington University in Business Administration.
Dennis retired from the Army in 1986, having earned numerous awards including The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star Medal with Oakleaf Cluster, and The Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
Dennis is remembered fondly by his family, friends and fellow soldiers, as a man with great character and strength. His love of God and his Catholic faith inspired his commitments to his soldiers and his love and dedication to his family: wife Maggie and four children, Benedict, Kelly, Monica and Connie. He spent his well deserved retired life, building his home within the pine trees of East Texas, serving in the Right to Life Movement, rebuilding antique cars and spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Fred, and son, Benedict Boerner. Dennis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maggie; three children Kelly (David) Kastner, Monica Boerner, Connie (Michael) Bingham; brother Fred Boerner, sister Evelyn Kalinec; daughter in law Denise; nine grandchildren Megan (Stefan), Chris (Mallory), Marshall (Courtney), Alyson, Rachel, Ryan, Reagan, Chloe, Marshall; and four great-grandchildren Bryn, Bristol, Brody, and Caroline.
The Rosary will begin at 6 pm on Sunday, November 27 at the chapel of Treviño Smith funeral home. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Monday, November 28, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in College Station. Burial will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio,Tx on December 8th at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in his honor to the Right to Life of East Texas or Benedict J Boerner endowment fund at Texas A&M University.
