Edward Dougherty Obituary

Edward R. Dougherty Jr., husband, father of three, grandfather of four, mentor and renowned scholar, passed away on November 1, 2025 at the age of 80.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey on September 5, 1945 to Edward Russell Sr. and Ann (Maglione) Dougherty, Ed went on to receive his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1974. He joined Texas A&M in 1996 after faculty positions at Rochester Institute of Technology and Fairleigh Dickinson University. At Texas A&M, he held the titles of Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Robert M. Kennedy '26 Chair. Other honors include a 2007 Doctor Honoris Causa from Tampere University of Technology. His prolific scholarship includes the authoring of 16 books and more than 300 journal articles which continue to shape current research.

Beyond his scholarly contributions, Professor Dougherty was deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of engineers and scientists and to fostering interdisciplinary approaches bridging engineering, biology and signal processing. The memory of his unique personality, strong integrity, and devoted mentorship will remain with many of his former students and colleagues.

Ed and Terry (Michaels) were married in August, 1980, and together they raised three sons: Russell (Mera), John, and Edward Sean (Laura). He also is survived by four grandchildren: Edward Townes, June, Emer, and Frances Jack.

His family will remember his love of mythology, countless hours working on the Triumph TR6 in the garage, and his many wild talents-from bowling to playing and coaching basketball to the deep conversations he sparked about philosophy, world history and epistemology. He taught people how to think, not just what to know.

A memorial service will be held on January 9, 2026 at 11 a.m. at All Faiths Chapel at Texas A&M, College Station, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made be made in memory of Edward R. Dougherty to Hospice Brazos Valley or the Texas A&M Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Scholarship Fund.
