Jeffrey Conant Obituary

April 5, 1955 - June 30, 2009

A Memorial service honoring the life of Jeffrey Scott Conant, 54, of College Station, will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, July 3, 2009 at First United Methodist Church of Bryan, located at 506 E. 28th Street. Rev. Matt Idom will officiate. A private family burial will take place Friday morning at the historic Old Bethel Cemetery. Dr. Conant died Tuesday, June 30th at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

Jeffrey was born in Buffalo, New York, the son of Howard Somers Conant and Florence Christina Conant. He was Department Head and Professor of Marketing at the Mays Business School at Texas A & M University. Since joining the university in 1986, Dr. Conant's passion for teaching earned him numerous awards. In 2004, Dr. Conant was designated a Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence, awarded to him by then president and now Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, and in 2005 he was designated the Eppright University Professor in Undergraduate Teaching Excellence. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence ever since his Ph. D. student days at Arizona State University and has been a prolific author of many award-winning professional articles in his field. Dr. Conant was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Bryan, serving on the Strategic Planning Committee and the Finance Committee. He was thrilled to have been able to accompany the youth group on mission and summer trips. His faith guided him, and his passions were his family, always there to cheer them on in whatever activity they were involved; volunteering to help coach his children's athletic teams, and his own personal mission of caring for each and every person to whom he became acquainted. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother.

Dr. Conant is survived by his wife, Carol Conant; his daughter and son-in-law, Danielle Christine and Reilly Garrett of El Paso; his sons, Scott Howard Conant and Trevor Robert Conant, both of College Station; his father, Howard Somers Conant of Tucson, Arizona; his sister and brother-in-law, Judith Conant-Steinbach and Gary Steinbach of Richmond, Kentucky; two nieces and four nephews along with a multitude of colleagues, students and friends.

Family members have requested that memorials be made in Jeffrey's name to First United Methodist Church in Bryan, 506 E. 28th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803, or donations can be made as a lasting legacy to the Jeffrey S. Conant Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Texas A&M Foundation, 4113 TAMU, 440 Wehner Bldg, College Station, TX 77843-4113 Attn: David Hicks.

While browsing the Internet, I decided to look up my mothers uncle. His name is Howard Sommers Conant. I came across this obituary for Howard's son Jeff. As a young child, I remember Howard, his wife Florence, Judy and Jeff coming to visit. We lived in Wisconsin. My parents are Jerome and Alice Wirth(Haukohl).(Both deceased). I never knew Jeff, but I do remember Grandma Haukohl speaking of both Judy and Jeff. My Grandmother and Jeff's Grandmother (Edith) were sisters.

Carol, Danielle, Scott, & Trevor,

We were very saddened to hear about Jeff. Through the years we got to know the Conant Family in different capacities. The first time we met you all was at Sam Houston Elementary where I got to teach Danielle, Scott, & Trevor. Then later, we got to know you through Harvey Little League where Scott & Brian played together on the same team. I will never forget that whenever Jeff saw my husband and I, he always greeted me with, "Hola, Sra. McCartney". Jeff was a great man and will greatly be missed. May your wonderful memories of him help you get through this very tough time and may God Bless you all.

Sincerely,

Lee, Debbie, Travis and Tyler Reed

I am sad and shocked to hear of Jeff's untimely death.

I was one of his first graduate assistants at Texas A&M starting in 1988; and now a marketing professor myself. As such, I have an inside view on how much he really cared about teaching, his students, and others he interacted with.

He seemed driven by a higher power than most in our profession; an inspirational figure trying to change as many lives for the better as he possibly could.

Rest in peace and know that you inspired many, including me, in the best way possible.
