He spent his formative years in Axtell, growing up under the dedicated care of several uncles and one aunt after the early death of his parents. He graduated from Axtell High School in 1942 and entered Texas A&M College.
His distinguished military career began when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in May 1943. He served on Okinawa and in Japan during World War 11, attaining the rank of staff sergeant before concluding his initial active duty on April 1946.General Miller returned to Texas A&M, earned his B.S, degree in Electrical Engineering, and was commissioned as a Marine second lieutenant in June 1949. Following graduation, John married Virginia Campbell.
After completing The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia in June 1950, General Miller participated in combat operations in Korea. He landed with the 1st Marine Division at Inchon, fought through Seoul and later the Chosin Reservoir. His bravery and leadership during this time earned him the Bronze Star Medal (with gold star in lieu of a second award) and the Purple Heart Medal (with two gold stars).
General Miller served in various units in subsequent years and furthered his education at the U.S. Army War College, completing the course in June 1969. He was then ordered to Vietnam, where he became Commanding Officer, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Force Logistics Command, earning the Legion of Merit for his service.
His career advanced significantly in the 1970s. He was promoted to brigadier general on July 2, 1974, becoming Deputy Commander, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia. After retiring, General Miller enjoyed playing golf, bridge and dominoes. He was always following Aggie sports and particularly liked attending Aggie baseball and football games. He attended many grandkids events and loved to hear about their exploits if they lived far away. He volunteered at Still Creek Ranch where he shared his faith and values with kids for many years. Later, when he became less mobile, he mentored many young people through the WISE program sponsored by Arbor Oaks, his unassisted living home for ten years. Lastly, but certainly not least, he loved Grace Bible Church and later Arbor Oaks services. He never missed a Sunday. The fellowship with friends and fellow Christens meant the world to him.
