April 3, 1948 - June 11, 2016
After a brave 7-year fight with Prostate Cancer, Jose D. Cavazos died peacefully on Saturday, June 11th, surrounded by his family. He was blessed to have lived a full life and was loved by many for his amazing wit, charisma, and incredible sense of humor. Born on April 3rd, 1948 in Anahuac, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Jesus Maria Cavazos and Bertha Cavazos Calvo, he was the 2nd of 12 children the couple would have. From a young age, Jose loved working with his hands. In his teens, his family moved from Mexico to North Dakota to work in the fields in order to provide for their families. This would impact the rest of his life as he quickly learned the value of a hard-day's work.
Always a go-getter, Jose held a variety of jobs, many times simultaneously. His love for food led him to El Chico Restaurant in Bryan where he enjoyed cooking everyday. He always loved grilling and cooking for friends and family alike. You may have also seen Jose as a Stocker at Kroger, Wal-Mart, or H-E-B. He had an amazing work ethic. Having only completed a 6th grade education, it was his mission to work hard so his children would have more opportunities than he did. He even taught himself how to speak English!
Jose also loved old cars and trucks, especially old Ford trucks. He could identify any make and model simply by looking at any detail like a tail light or bumper. After a back injury in the 80's followed by three surgeries, Jose decided to use this love of cars by joining the team at Allen Oldsmobile. Upon retirement, Jose continued to work part-time at Miramont Country Club before his illness finally forced him into early retirement.
On November 7, 1970, Jose married his first wife, Julia Carmona Martinez. The couple had three children together that he leaves behind: Julia E. Theiss (husband Michael) of College Station, TX, Jose R. Cavazos-Dungan (husband John) of Cypress, TX, and Josue "Josh" A. Cavazos (wife Nicole) of Bryan, TX. Jose also leaves behind grandchildren Mackenzie Shrock, Kyle Krueger, and Karson K. Cavazos. Jose married his second wife, Cristina Velarde, on December 29, 2001 and had two children: Melissa Cavazos, and Angel J. Cavazos, all in Bryan, TX.
Jose is proceeded in death by his ex-wife Julia Carmona Martinez, his father Jesus M. Cavazos, a brother Cesar Cavazos (widow Terri), brother Federico, and nephew Muncie Cavazos (widow Amabell). Remembering Jose now are his mother, Bertha Cavazos Calvo, brothers Jesus Cavazos (wife Lourdes), David Cavazos (wife Bertha), Oscar Cavazos (wife Abelina), and Victor Cavazos (wife Melissa), sisters Irma Hernandez (husband Robert), Bertha DeJesus (widow of Romualdo), Dora Hernandez (husband Luis), Silvia Vazquez (widow of Valdemar), and Nydia Riojas (husband Ricky). They are joined by nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, lifelong friends, and many others who remember the legacy this generous and caring man leaves behind.
