Kenneth L. Kuttler DVM

May 29, 1924 - November 13, 2012

Dr. Kenneth L. Kuttler, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in College Station on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

Friends are invited to greet his family on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Services to honor his life will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 19, with a public viewing prior to the services at 9 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, corner of Welsh and Deacon in College Station, under the direction of Bishop Ben Cluff. Interment will follow at the College Station City Cemetery.

Kenneth was born May 29, 1924, in Ft. Worth, TX, the only child of Abner Kenneth and Susie (Latimer Kuttler. The family moved to Boise, Idaho, when Kenneth was 13. It was here that he developed his love for mountains and hiking. He graduated from Boise High School, attended Boise Junior College and graduated from Veterinary School at Colorado State College in 1945. Later he earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees. While on active duty in the Army during Korean War, he discovered his talent for research work while assigned to a biological warfare unit. Research in animal diseases became his life's work. Upon his discharge from the Army he worked for the USDA, then as Department chairman at the University of Nevada, Reno, and later as a professor of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Upon his retirement from Texas A&M, he concluded his professional career with the USDA in Maryland and Later in Moscow, ID where he finally retired in 1986. During his years of research he had the opportunity to move his family on two occasions to Kenya and once to Bogota, Columbia. He was the author of about 150 professional papers on subjects ranging from Neurotropic viruses to bovine tuberculosis, to white muscle disease in sheep, to anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

His family and his Church were top priorities in his life. He married Joanne Hyde in 1950 and together they raised four sons and a daughter. He served as a missionary to South Africa twice, as a Bishop, and as a Sunday School teacher. That last 20 years of his life he served in the LDS Temple, first in Dallas and then Houston, which brought him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Abner and Susie Kuttler.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joanne; four sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Jr. and Sharon of Provo, UT, Kerry and Cyndee of Tucson, AZ, Keith and Kathy of College Station, TX, Kraig and Kathryn of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Joanne and Glenn Beus of Othello, WA; 31 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
