Sidney Smith Obituary

Sidney P. Smith, 87, a resident of Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community, died 9:05 P.M. Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, at Otterbein St. Marys.
He was born Sept. 22, 1938, near Shinbone in Auglaize County, the son of John and Bernice (Stienecker) Smith.
He married his  high school sweetheart, Mary P. Spear, on May 11, 1957, in Angola, Indiana, and she survives at Otterbein St. Marys.
He is also survived by his children: Pete (Lisa) Smith of Covington, Kentucky; Patti (Dennis) Boshears of Sidney, Ohio; Preston (Marcia) Smith of Ypsilanti, Michigan. He is survived by his grandchildren: Zachary Smith; Payton (Renz) Lajo; Jacob Smith; Sydni Boshears; William Boshears; by a great-grandson, Wyatt Davidson; great-granddaughter, Isabela Lajo. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry (Nelly) Smith of Bluffton, Ohio; by sisters-in-law Nancy Rinderle, Elizabeth Springmeier and Jeanette Murphy; brother-in-law Thomas (Diane) Spear; by numerous nieces and nephews; by his dog, Smiley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by Mary's parents, Elmer and Mary Katherine Spear; by his brothers-in-law, Owen Rinderle and Elmer C. Spear; by  his sister-in-law, Cheryl Carnes; by his uncle Peck Smith; his nephew Mark Rinderle and by longtime family friend Betty Rison; by his companion dog, Daisy.
Sid was a 1956 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Vietnam Era. He retired after 20 years of service as a firefighter/EMT from the City of St. Marys Fire Department.  He later worked in real estate sales and Auglaize County Council on Aging. He was elected as a St. Marys City Councilman and was the representative for the Salvation Army. 
Sid was very active in the Masonic Lodge and was 50 year member of Mercer Lodge # 121; Antioch Shrine; was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Dayton; and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 91. He was a lifemember of American Legion Post 323. He was a lifelong member of Saint Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys.
Sid enjoyed his Corvettes, hunting for antiques at auctions and sales; travels to Europe, Mexico and all over the US. In later years he and Mary enjoyed wintering in Destin, Florida and playing cards with their grandsons.
Sid was  caring and thoughtful to his wife, Mary, bringing her flowers every Friday. He was an excellent Dad, superb Grandpa and all around friend. He will be remembered for his big, fun personality and kindness to everyone he knew.
Funeral rites will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Rd., St. Marys, Pastor Ed Karges, officiant. Burial, with military honors presented by American Legion Post 323 and VFW Post 9289, will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be given to either the Shriners' Hospital for Children in Dayton or to Grand Lake Hospice.
