FRANKLIN - Charles Raymond "Ray" Shuford, 69, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida.
A pioneering force in medical simulation and aerospace technology, Ray left an indelible mark on the fields he helped shape and the lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
Born May 4, 1956, in Franklin, Ray demonstrated a keen intellect and a passion for innovation from an early age. He pursued higher education at North Carolina State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. This academic foundation laid the groundwork for a distinguished career defined by technical expertise, strategic leadership and a relentless commitment to advancing medical education through simulation technologies.
Throughout his professional life, Ray was widely respected for his visionary contributions to medical simulation. His work played a critical role in enhancing the training of healthcare professionals around the world. The technologies he helped develop not only improved educational outcomes but also contributed to better patient care. Beyond his technical achievements, Ray was deeply committed to mentoring others. Many colleagues credit him with shaping their careers through his guidance and support.
Ray's personal life was as rich and fulfilling as his professional one. He shared a loving marriage with his wife Virginia, who stood by his side through every chapter of life. Together they built a life filled with shared experiences and enduring love.
An avid golfer, Ray found joy and relaxation on courses across the globe. Whether playing a quiet round close to home or exploring new fairways abroad, golf was one of his great passions, a pursuit that brought him both challenge and camaraderie.
In April 2025, after months of study and reflection, Ray entered into the Catholic Church, a spiritual milestone that reflected his thoughtful nature and deep personal convictions.
Ray was predeceased by his parents, Lilla and James; sister, Virginia; and brother, James. Their memories remained close to him throughout his life.
Ray's legacy lives on through the many professionals whose medical education was enhanced by the innovations he championed and through the countless individuals he mentored along the way. His impact will continue to resonate in classrooms, hospitals, laboratories and in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, Aug. 8, at 8:30 a.m., at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 12001 69th Street, Parrish, FL 34219
