Tom McNish Obituary

Tom McNish, MD, COL (ret) USAF, passed away at home Friday, July 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief and complicated illness. He was born in Madison, Tennessee, in 1942 to Mary Elenora and Edgar McNish and was a 1964 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Tom was a Vietnam War veteran who flew 45 combat missions in the F-105. Shot down in 1966, he was captured and spent 2,373 days as a POW in North Vietnam. While a prisoner, he decided to study medicine when he returned home. Upon his release in 1973, he attended Emory University School of Medicine, graduating in 1978 and completed residencies in both Family Practice and Aerospace Medicine.
Dr. McNish spent the remainder of his distinguished military career as one of a select few Pilot Physicians (practicing flight surgeons and combat ready fighter pilots) in the Air Force, flying T-38s and A-10s. Advancing to the rank of colonel, he served as Hospital Commander at Myrtle Beach AFB and Holloman AFB. He proudly led the mission to Iraq at the end of Desert Storm in 1991 to medically evaluate and repatriate our returning POWs. Col. McNish ended his military career as Command Flight Surgeon for the AF Reserve in the Surgeon General's office at the Pentagon.
After his 30-year Air Force career, he joined Biodynamic Research Corporation (BRC) in San Antonio, Texas, as a consultant and partner, where he utilized his vast engineering and medical background. While at BRC he worked on many high-profile accident investigations including the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, the Sept. 11 crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and the Daytona 500 crash that took the life of Dale Earnhardt.
Those who knew him will remember his wit, patience, diplomacy, judgment, character and his careful analysis and synthesis of any problem. His dedication to duty was legendary and he never failed to make any situation he was involved in better after his contribution. He was a wise and gentle man and a consensus builder. Tom was a wonderful combination of warrior and diplomat who loved his country unconditionally.
Col. McNish was awarded three silver stars, the Legion of Merit, three Bronze Stars with the "V" device, two Purple Hearts, five Air Medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Tom loved his family more than anything and is survived by his cherished wife Yona; their children, Lori (Wes), Amy (Tim) and Tommy (Jessi); nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial services will take place at his childhood home in Macon County. A celebration of life will be held in San Antonio at a yet-to-be-determined date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests tributes be made in the form of contributions to the Mary E. McNish Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Fund at Emory University. Donations can be made out to Emory University with "Mary McNish Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Fund" in the memo and mailed to: Office of Gift Accounting, Emory University, 1762 Clifton Road, Suite 2400, Atlanta, GA 30322 or visit https://together.emory.edu/McNish to make an online donation.

I have thought of the years I have known Tom as a roommate and POW in Hanoi and since. He has left a lasting impression on me and I feel a definite loss. The world is a lesser place. He was one of the most intelligent people I knew and proved his worth by becoming a medical doctor and devoting his time to the Veterans and society. Yes, I will miss you my friend and wish you a smooth flight west.

I worked with Tom for 30 years at Biodynamic Research Corporation (BRC) for where we were biomechanical consultants. We were also partners and on the board of directors. Tom was the board chairman for six years and he did a remarkable job keeping the board members focused and on point. As a consultant Tom's intelligent approach to cases and calm demeanor made him a sought after consultant by BRC's clients. What most impressed be about Tom was that he never stopped growing as a person and that trait made him enjoyable to work with. Tom played a big role in BRC's success over the last 20 years and his presence will be missed. My condolences go out to Yona and Tom's family.

Fond memories of Tom as kids at our Kinsey grandparents home in Madison, and reunions and visits with him and Yona and their family, and great admiration for his life of service to our country as fighter pilot and POW, and to humanity as a physician and medical research specialist! I am honored to have been his cousin and have my family benefit from his company. Keeping Yona and the family in prayer for God´s comfort for their loss. Cousin Steve Sleboda

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the entire McNish family on the sad loss of Tom. He was an American patriot and hero in the true meaning of the words - an example of the kind of man who made this country great. Now, following his last flight, may he rest in peace forever in heaven. "Throw a nickel on the grass ..." GBU, Tom

Tom was a great friend and a wonderful person. We communicated secretly in the Hanoi Hilton POW camp with the hand code that he and his roommate invented. Tom was a brilliant and courageous warrior and we will all miss him.

Tom and I were colleagues at BRC for many years. I first met Tom while he was the long-time president of our small international group of pilot-physicians. His calm strength, towering presence and quiet leadership brought us together and created collaborations that led to important contributions to science and aerospace medicine. He always spoke of Yona and his family with love and reverence, and to them we extend our deepest condolences.

We have lost one of the best! Shortly after Tom started working at BRC, we began to work together, and we teamed together on many cases over the years. While I like to think we learned from each other, he taught me much about the indomitable human spirit, especially when guided by honesty, integrity and love of others. He will be missed. Love and condolences to his family and friends. Keith.

Yona:

I was devastated to hear of Tom´s passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences. The world will be a more drab place without Tom´s intellect, whit and charm. I was blessed to be able to call Tom a friend and will miss our dinners there in San Antonio.

I will end this with something Tom always ended his e-mails to me with -
