Bertie L. Schneider

BERTIE L. SCHNEIDER Marion Bertie L. Schneider, 91, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on May 24, 2020. Bertie Lou Schneider was born in Saginaw, Mich., to Marguerite and Chester Swarthout. She had six siblings: Marguerite, Ron, Florence, Chester, Bart and Maurice. She went to the Arthur Hill High School and studied music at Alma College and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. She was married to Claude Mendell for 18 years; she married Melvin Schneider on Aug. 20, 1965. She occasionally performed professionally at the Lido Supper Club, but mostly, she loved to the entertain family. Playing violin, piano, melodica and signing were all in her repertoire. She played violin in the Marshalltown Symphony and performed in a community theater production of Carousel. Bertie was always there for her children; she raised Jeff from the age of seven and he was very proud to call her "mom." Her nickname was the "Old Goat" which she always found amusement in. She would always go beyond the duty taking care of Mel, who preceded her in death due to Alzheimer's. Survivors include her son, Lance (Carol) Mendell; grandsons, Richard Mendell and Nathan Pawell; granddaughters, Heather Carrieri and Jennifer Eutsey; 10 great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Andreya Schneider; stepson,, Ron Schneider and Jeff (Sharon) Schneider; and step-grandchildren, Emily Schneider, Jessica Schneider, John (Rosemary) Schnedier and Travis (Jamie) Schneider. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Claude; second husband, Melvin; and several brothers and sisters. She will be truly missed and loved by all who knew her. The family would like to thank Rabbi Thalblum for his service during their time of need. Due to COVID-19, a private family Celebration of Life took place at Temple Judah in May of 2020. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Temple Judah.
