Growing up on a farm in Iowa between Walker and Center Point, he developed a lifelong interest in nature. He graduated from Walker High School in 1962, earned a B.S. in science and humanities with a major in zoology from Iowa State University in 1968, and went on to receive a Master of Arts in 1973 from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. Dale met Patricia (Novak) when they were both serving as counselors at East Iowa Bible Camp. They were married July 23, 1966, and they just celebrated their 55 wedding anniversary. The couple was blessed with two children, Karin and Dan. They first made their home in Gilbert, Iowa, while Dale completed his undergraduate work at Iowa State. They then moved to Keswick, where he taught biology, chemistry, physics and photography at Tri-County Schools in Thornburg until moving to Chariton in 1972. Dale taught at Chariton High School for 28 years, teaching biology, life science, earth science and anatomy. He coached girls' basketball, helped announce football games, and worked the table at basketball games. Mr. Wiley expected the best from his students, but he also had the ability to have a good sense of humor while teaching his classes. His children observed that his expectations of them in the classroom were consistent with the standards he set for his other students. After retiring from teaching in 2000, Dale worked for 14 years at Johnson Machine Works in Chariton. His experience as an educator, fascination with the big machines, and skills in detail work all contributed to making his time of service there fulfilling and enjoyable. Dale and Pat are members of Adelphi Calvary Baptist Church in Runnells. He was active in church responsibilities throughout his adult life. When Dale did something, he did it thoroughly. He loved to garden and work in his yard, and he took pleasure in sharing his produce with others. He was passionate about hunting and fishing, and many hours in the woods, in the fields, and on the lake deepened his understanding and enjoyment of wild creatures and their habits. Wiley family gatherings always held stories about hunting and the outdoors. Dale had an older sister, Marcia Wiley; and four younger brothers, Myron, Darrell, Grant and Linn. His parents, Harold and Ruth Wiley, have preceded him in death, along with his sister, Marcia. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Pat; children, Karin Wiley and Dan Wiley; and brothers, Myron (Mary Susan), Darrell (Debbie), Grant (Anne) and Linn (Barb); along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
