Gregg Kruse Obituary

Gregg Anthony Kruse, 85, died peacefully in Iowa City, Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, surrounded by his wife and daughter. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at Zion Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Marsha Smith officiating. The Iowa City Fire Department will honor Gregg at his service. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday after 9:30 a.m. at the church. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato, Minn., with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Carnegie Cultural Center, P.O. Box 243, New Hampton, IA 50659, which houses Gregg's permanent collection of his handmade circus wagons; or to the Oaknoll Foundation Scholarship Fund. Condolences may be sent to Louise Kruse at P.O. Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244. Gregg was born Jan. 28, 1938, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Frank and Margaret (Graf) Kruse. He was raised in Mankato and Vernon Center, Minn. and was later adopted by Marion Anderson. In 1956 Gregg graduated from Garden City High School (MN). Gregg received his bachelor's degree from Mankato State University and did graduate studies at the University of Iowa. Gregg married Louise Gustafson on Dec. 20, 1958, at the First English Lutheran Church in Faribault, Minn. Gregg and Louise would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this December. They moved to Iowa City in 1961. Gregg was a medical technologist/ histologist at the VAMC for 26 years, retiring in 1989. He was the volunteer historian and photographer for the Iowa City Fire Department and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Gregg was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 4 Iowa City, the Iowa City Shrine Club, Davenport Scottish Rite Bodies, Davenport Kaaba Shrine, and an affiliate member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Gregg's family would like to thank all Oaknoll Assisted Living, Short Stay and Health Center Staff and Iowa City Hospice for the loving and supportive care given to Gregg these past months. Gregg is survived by his wife, Louise; daughter, Andrea (John) Aughinbaugh of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, Emma and Zoe; siblings, Susan (Steven) Feusier of Fairfax, Va., Dawn (Arlen) Lloyd of Gruver, Texas, Kim (Cheryl) Anderson of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Gregg was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Margaret Anderson; and parents-in-law, Herbert Gustafson and Ed and Murial Bottke. Online condolences may be shared at www.lensingfuneral.com.

It was always nice to see Gregg walk into the firehouse. Always smiled, soft spoken, everybody's friend. He just brightened the day!
