Robert Richardson Obituary

ROBERT HUGO RICHARDSON West Linn, Ore. Robert Hugo Richardson, born March 12, 1937, died surrounded by his family on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, in West Linn, Ore. Robert was a beloved husband to Anne Richardson, cherished father to Sarah Richardson (David Barker), Rachel Richardson (Michael Deppe), Christopher Richardson (Laura Sacco), Dawn Radtke, Tyler Radtke (Larry Fox) and grandfather to Meg, Will, Charlotte, Louisa, Sophia, Isabella and Spencer. He is survived by his former wife, Margaret E. Richardson; and his brother, David Richardson (Eliza Linley). Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Louise Richardson. Robert was born in Evanston, Ill., and grew up in Iowa, North Dakota and Minnesota, moving frequently with his family because his father was a Methodist minister. He developed an early love of opera and all music as a child while listening to the Metropolitan Opera on the radio and recovering from rheumatic fever. He loved Bach and Mozart, but also enjoyed Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash, among others. As the son of preachers and teachers, he continued the family tradition of service to others by becoming a physician. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in psychology and an M.D. with specialties in internal medicine and critical care. He pursued master's level classes in ethics at the University of Pittsburgh and passed the palliative care boards late in his career. Robert served in the U.S. Air Force as a critical care physician in Tachikawa, Japan. He disagreed with the Vietnam War, but he was proud to have served his country, treating wounded soldiers from Vietnam and teaching Japanese medical interns. He and his family developed a lifelong love of Japan. Robert trained in fiberoptic bronchoscopy at the National Cancer Center in Japan and returned to lecture there later in life. When Robert returned to the U.S, he brought his fiberoptic bronchoscopy and critical care skills to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) where he helped set up the MICU. He served on a national panel which established detailed standards for CPR. He moved from the UIHC to Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside in Clackamas, OR where he led the ICU and developed the palliative care department. With his knowledge of ethics he worked on the protocols for Oregon's Death with Dignity Act. He moved to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) at the end of his medical career where he focused on palliative care. Robert loved taking care of people and hearing their stories. He believed in providing health care to everyone as an early provider at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic in the 1970s. His move to Kaiser-Permanente's HMO system helped him realize his goal of providing healthcare more broadly and fairly to people. A talented and committed runner, he ran 19 marathons during his life -- from Iowa to Boston to Paris to Portland. He loved the Zen of running. Robert enjoyed politics and history. He was especially interested in the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. He was a man who took life seriously in every way and worked for a better world. He taught his children the importance of kindness, decency, justice, and truth. His intelligence, gentleness, humility, vulnerability, and sense of humor are defining traits to which his family aspires. There will be no public memorial service. Memorials may be directed to the OHSU Center for Ethics in Health Care or the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic.

My family had the wonderful fortune to spend many a July 4th on the coast at Gearhardt,Oregon sharing our food and families and thoughtful conversations.
Robert's profound contributions about politics and ethics especially contribute to the knowledge and decisions we practice daily.

Robert was the medical director of both Respiratory Care Services, the Pulmonary Function Lab and Sleep Lab for many years at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. I worked in collaboration with him as I was the manager of those medical inpatient/outpatient services for a number of years. He was truly a gift for us with his knowledge of pulmonary disease and his focus on the practice of medical ethics which became as essential part of services for KP members. He touched so many lives with his good intentions and knowledge. It was a honor to work with him and his fellow practitioners. He led with both his heart and his knowledge and understanding of the needs of so many people that benefited from his assistance in the practice of pulmonary medicine.

I want to share one special memory that says more than my words about him. He shared with me that he would give his home phone number to patients that he saw in his clinic practice. This is NOT the usual/customary practice for physicians. When I learned of this practice we had an interesting conversation about the consequences of such practices. He shared with me that it was not a problem because the patients never called him..yet they left his clinic knowing that he was there for them whenever they needed help. I think that these choices clearly illustrate the good will, skill and empathy that gave meaning to his life and work. It certainly led to a building of trust between the patient and him that benefited both the patient and provider. He truly walked the talk in his daily practices.

I trust that my sharing of this single moment that says so much about Robert and his approach to both his life and his profession. He was a good man and truly of benefit to so many in need of the care that he was able to provide and direct. He fully embraced the practice of being of benefit and to do no harm which is the essence of meaningful medical care as well as a guiding principle for all of our lives.

I trust that this memory, one of many, will be of benefit to both his family and those who knew Robert so well. It certainly meant so much to me over those many years and will be well remembered in my heart.

The photo of Robert beautifully documents the soulful smile of a man so loved by many. Rich and I spent many a July 4th in the company of Robert and his beloved Anne at the coast in Gearhart, Oregon.
In our memories, he lives and loves.

I enjoyed walking with Robert for several years. He pushed me out of my comfort zone in several ways. He encouraged me to walk different routes. When we first started walking together, I walked only one route. Within a year, we had walked over eight different routes, many multiple times. Secondly, he pushed me to walk farther.

I enjoyed his stories of growing up in the Midwest. Stories of visiting his grandmother in Colorado. And, most entertaining, the story of his great grandma marching onto a docked navel ship and demanding that the commander release her husband, so he could return home to support her.

We both shared an interest in the history of World War II, its battles, equipment and leadership. We watched three or four war movies together and discussed many more.

I miss Robert a great deal and offer condolences to his family.
