William Price "Bill" Albrecht

William "Bill" Price Albrecht, 89, of Iowa City passed away October 30, 2024 at Oaknoll Retirement Residence surrounded by family. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by many. Bill married Fran Jaecques on July 4, 1976 in Iowa City, IA and together they enjoyed 48 years of marriage. He was an avid tennis player, enjoyed traveling around the world, treasured time with family, and loved dogs. When traveling he was always amazed when he ran into former students or other people he knew. He enjoyed a good debate, particularly when it involved economics. Bill was born on January 7, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA to William Price Albrecht Sr. and Jane (Moses) Albrecht. He received his Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) from Princeton University (1956), a Master's Degree (Economics) from the University of South Carolina (1962), and a PhD (Economics) from Yale University (1965). He served in the United States Navy from 1956-61, where he served as an Engineering Officer on the USS Vammen (Destroyer Escort 644). He joined the University of Iowa faculty in 1965. Along with teaching economics at the University, he was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs (1984-86), Associate Dean for External Programs (1986-88), and Justice Professor of International Business (2000-07). He also served as the University's first Global Scholar and established the Institute for International Business. He authored three economics textbooks while at the University. In 1974 he worked on domestic and international economic policy as a Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Dick Clark in Washington, D.C. He was proud of his time serving as a Commissioner on the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 1988-1993. As Acting Chairman in 1993, he led the Commission's efforts to implement the Futures Trading Practices Act of 1992. He was also the CFTC's representative to the International Organization of Securities Commission (IOSCO). In this capacity he played an active role in developing cooperative arrangements with financial regulators around the world. After returning to Iowa in 1993, he continued his association with IOSCO. Bill is survived by his wife Fran Albrecht of Iowa City, IA; seven children: William "Ken" Albrecht (Richard Graves) of Austin, TX, Alison Albrecht (Robert DeVoe) of Minnetonka, MN, Amy Stanbro of Wapello, IA, Jonathan (Alandra) Albrecht of Cottage Grove, OR, Jeffrey (Toni) Albrecht of Austin, TX, Jay Bullard of Rome, Italy, and Jill (Steve) Frantz of Iowa City, IA; 10 grandchildren: Jacob Stanbro, Kyle Albrecht, Audrey Parry, Mitchell Albrecht, Hannah Albrecht, Carley Bakker, Owen Parry, Corey Moreno, Jennings Albrecht, Joshua Albrecht, and Jesse Albrecht; one great-grandchild Brooks Bakker; as well as his sister Jane Alix of Paris, France. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom, and son Frederick. Honoring his wishes, his body was donated to The University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Oaknoll Foundation or the Iowa City Free Lunch Program.
