Carl Caneva Obituary

Carl O. Caneva

Born: April 19, 1976

Died: June 29, 2018

Carl O. Caneva of Waukegan, IL passed away on June 29, 2018 after a nearly 2-year battle with cancer.

He was born on April 19, 1976 in Joliet, IL, the oldest child of Ron and Lynda Caneva. Carl grew up in Lockport, IL, playing Little League at Dellwood Park, memorizing every line of Star Wars, and loving the Chicago Cubs. He attended Taft Grade School and was a standout both academically and athletically, becoming the Salutatorian and Most Valuable Player for athletics. At Lockport High School, he would continue his strong academics and athletics always making the honor roll and playing center for the LTHS varsity basketball team during the 1992-'93 and 1993-'94 seasons. He graduated from LTHS in 1994 and went to college at Illinois State University to major in Environmental Science.

After graduation, he began his twenty-year career in environmental health in DuPage County as a sanitarian and then later worked with the City of Park Ridge as an environmental health officer. In 2004, he started working at the City of Evanston's Environmental Health Department, and he would eventually become a Division Manager and Assistant Director of the department. He led and collaborated on innovative projects that helped to detect water pollution in Lake Michigan, promote the use of green technology, and expedite restaurant inspections. He also obtained his Masters' Degree from Northeastern University and used that degree to teach geography courses at the College of Lake County after his workday at Evanston.

Carl married Kelly O'Connor in 2004, and they moved to Waukegan shortly after. They have one daughter, Isabelle, who was born in 2007 and who now shares his love for Star Wars and the Cubs. He was an amazing father, husband, son, grandson, brother, and uncle.

Carl is sustained by his family including his daughter, Isabelle; wife, Kelly; parents, Lynda and Ron; sister, Gina; grandfather, Oscar Johnson; uncle, Reno Caneva, uncle, Charlie Johnson; and aunt, Carol Johnson; along with his brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cousins. We will make sure that his humor, honesty, compassion, and unbreakable selflessness lives on in all of us and hope to pass it along to others whenever we share a story about him.

A celebration of Carl's life will be planned for friends and family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Carl asked all of us to take this next year and think of something good we can do for the world around us. This could mean helping out another person, donating to a cause, or planting a tree.

To know Carl was to know goodness, and he wanted to pass that along to all of us.

I am so sorry for the loss of one of the greatest man I knew. There are very few people that understood my sense of humor, but he not only did, but he had it too. I knew he was ill, but did not find out 'till today that he passed. A loss to my eorld.

Dearest Caneva family,
I can honestly say my life is better for having known Carl. He truly was the kindest, gentlest soul. His sense of humor was the best! We had a wonderful friendship that I don't know how I'm going to live without.
He was a wonderful human being, he loved each of you so much. Not one day went by when he didn't talk about his family.
I will miss him so much.
Rest in peace my sweet friend, I love you.

It is a deep sadness that I was only able to meet Carl a relatively short time ago. I wish whole heartedly I would have had the opportunity to know him longer. He was both a gentleman and a gentle man. I will never forget the constant kindness, warmth, and humor that flowed from him. The world is a darker place without his light.

I knew Carl through his work at the City, helping us here at the Evanston Community Foundation with presentations, and being part of Evanston Cradle to Career. It is a testament to his character that, although I just knew him through these occasional work meetings, I am deeply saddened by his death. He was such a kind, lovely, genuine person. My sympathies to the family. And I will do something good for the world in his memory.

Being neighbors, Gina and I would play basketball outside and sometimes Carl would play horse with us. He always had a smile on his face even when we gave him trouble. He was so helpful, smart and loved his family so much. He was funny and patient dealing with us crazy kids. I am so blessed to have played basketball with him and Gina. I am so thankful. Carl I will continue to help people and spread the legacy of kindness. My mom and I send our thoughts, prayers and hugs to the Caneva family.

I met Carl many many years ago when we were both starting out in our careers in environmental health. He had a passion and charisma that was infectious. He was just such a genuinely good guy. We became friends quickly (mostly because he was nice enough to laugh at my bad jokes) and how short I was next to him! Lol! It's been a long time since we spoke or saw each other as our lives took us in different directions, but as I think of all the great times we had at EH conferences through the years it will forever make me smile. You were a big part of that and I thank you for that Carl. I'm heartbroken and I'll miss you. Rest now my friend.
