Kevin Hansen Obituary

Kevin M. Hansen

Born: June 18, 1981

Died: April 11, 2015

Kevin M. Hansen, age 33, of Homewood, IL and formerly of Joliet, passed away suddenly Saturday, April 11, 2015, after a valiant and courageous seven day battle with acute myelocytic leukemia.

Kevin was born in Joliet on June 18, 1981. He was a 1999 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy where he was the Valedictorian and Man of the Year of the Class of 1999. He attended University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2003 Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Pre-professional Science Studies and as a member of the Order of the Coif. He continued his studies at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, graduating in 2005 with a Masters degree in Education, as well as during the 2003-2005 school years teaching biology and chemistry at St. Peter Marian Catholic High School in Worcester, MA.

He entered the seminary at Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri in July 2005, graduating in May 2007, with a Masters degree in Theology. He began his eight years at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago in August 2007, teaching theology and also doing multiple assignments including football equipment manager for the state championship Mt. Carmel football program, student service coordinator, after school prefect and scoreboard operator at the home basketball games. Each year, Kevin supervised the Mt. Carmel students on a trip to Washington, DC for the annual March for Life. Kevin was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Homewood.

Beloved son of Michael and Beth (Shankland) Hansen; loving brother of Eric, Andrew (Rachel) and Mary Catherine Hansen; proud uncle and Godfather of Anthony John Hansen; and dearest grandson of Mary Shankland and Cecilia Hansen. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Thomas (Sheila) Hansen, Betsy Hansen, Mary (David) Lawson, Christine (Rodney) Springer, Ann (Robert) Hatfield, Susan (Robert)Flavin, John Shankland, Sarah (Frank) Turk, Thomas (Joan) Shankland, William(Tina) Shankland and Joseph (Elaine) Shankland. Numerous cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his paternal Grandfather, William W. Hansen; and maternal Grandfather, Jack T. Shankland.

His family is grateful to everyone for their prayers and requests that you keep praying for Kevin's soul. A special appreciation is also extended to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and to the doctors and ICU nurses for their superb care and compassion who put every effort into attempting to keep Kevin alive. In the end, his strong heart and fighting spirit had endured enough.

Kevin's love of Jesus and His Church, living the commandments and his work ethic, attitude and integrity were the cornerstones of his life. He lived what he believed. He was truly a good and faithful servant. His love for his mother and his unwavering commitment to Pro-Life beliefs were very true. His love for and his guidance to his little sister "Shrinny" were extraordinary. Kevin especially looked forward to being with his father and his brothers Eric and Andrew for sporting events and golf games. They were the perfect foursome.

Funeral services for Kevin M. Hansen will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3202 Black Road (at Essington Road) Joliet, to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, 604 N. Raynor Ave., where Fr. Tony Mazurkiewicz, O.Carm., President of Mt. Carmel High School, will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial which will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon to which everyone is invited will follow the burial. Visitation Wednesday, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The rosary will be recited by Fr. Burke Masters at 8:00 p.m.

Please, no flowers requested. The family would appreciate Masses for Kevin's soul, as St. Monica said to her son St. Augustine: "Bury my body wherever you will; let not care of it cause you any concern. One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the Altar of the Lord wherever you may be."

Memorials to the Kevin M. Hansen Scholarship Fund at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago,IL would also be very much welcomed.

To the Hansen family,

I am so sorry for your loss. As I look at Kevin's picture I am reminded of a lot of memories shared on the football field and baseball diamond, and the positive impact he had on myself and others. The highest compliment I could ever pay someone was that they were a great teammate. Kevin was the best teammate I ever had and he was an even better person. I will never forget his dedication, selflessness, work ethic, faith, and sly sense of humor. I always admired him. I thank God for giving me the chance to have been his teammate and forgiving me great role model. I know words cannot heal the pain you feel, but I hope you can take solace in knowing Kevin had a tremendous impact on so many lives and served our Lord faithfully. My thoughts and prayers will be with Kevin and your family always. May he rest in peace.

John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

I met Kevin on the March for Life bus trip to/from Wash DC; he impressed me as a fine leader and role model for those boys, and brought out the best in them. The world is a darker place without his light among us. I am glad to have shared some of this experience with him.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I had the honor of working with Kevin's grandmother, Mary. Her devotion to her faith and her family clearly lives on in her children and grandchildren. To lose such a young man with so much to give makes all of us take a moment to consider our own efforts to live out our faith and sharing it in all that we do. My prayers will continue to include the Shankland and Hansen families. May He grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

April 14, 2015

Mr. and Mrs. Hansen, I have been a high school teacher for over 40 years...engaging more than hundreds of young people during that time...Kevin was a student in my Spanish class at JCA..How does a teacher recall each young person over that span of time and yet,I can picture Kevin instantly down to exact seat where he sat in my classroom..what causes such recall, it is all those things so many have written about him in this book of condolences; things that have given me a lasting impressions of one individual out of hundreds that have been before me in the classroom...I have kept several prayers cards over the years as there are so many beautiful verses on many of them..May I share the following with you
"One gift, above all others God gives to us to treasure...One that knows no time, no place and one gold cannot measure...The precious, poignant, tender gift of memory-that will keep our dear ones ever in our hearts. Although God gives them sleep, it brings back long remembered things... a song, a word, a smile...and how the world's a better place because we had them for awhile.
Remembering Kevin by name in prayer today and in all those days to come as well as you his family...Mary Ann Worst(JCA)

To the Hansen family. My son learned so much in Mr. Hansen's theology class he often shared what his teachings and quite pleasantly surprised me by his new found curiosity about God and other religions. It made me very proud. What a gift and treasure your son Kevin was to so many students. It is clear by the beautiful words above about his life on earth that he has truly left a legacy in the hearts and minds of so many. That is a gift that will live on for many years to come. I met Kevin when he started bringing MCHS students to the World Computer Exchange to help as volunteers. Over the years he brought dozens of students. I admired the way the he interacted with the kids. At the end of each volunteer event he would sit and reflect with the kids to guarantee they understood the impact and reasons they were there. He lead them to understand the value of giving to others.

I know Kevin was key part of these kids lives and I'm sure the lives of many others. He will be missed
