The first thing I see when I I think of my cousin Michael are his smiling eyes. I didn’t see Michael very often but when I did see him it was usually at a family gathering and everyone welcomed his visit. I have one nice memory of him and that was when his mother Aunt Ingeborg and I had a nice telephone conversation one day. She informed me that Michael was taking a course at Northern Illinois University where my daughter was taking courses at the same time. I like to think that they passed by each other at least one time or another. Thank you Michael for being a wonderful cousin.

I treasure this YouTube which recorded Michael's reading of some of my poems many years ago.

NOT A DIRGE
-- in memory of my dear friend, Michael Galati
I was told
that you left this planet
to start in another world
an eternal life
But somehow in my heart
I can still hear your laughter
and see your smiling face
When I open the volumes of your work
I see you standing right there on a platform
speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of listeners
Even if you are gone
I feel there's not much point
in writing a mournful dirge
because I remember these comforting words from a professor
"For one who has spent a fruitful life on earth
there's no reason to pity when he leaves this world
Do you think Beethoven and Shakespeare would feel unhappy
at the end of their lives?"
I see you are now joining their ranks
with a smile

Condolences from all of his friends at UCC Rhinelander. It was truly a joy to call Michael a friend. He will be missed at his second church home up here in the Northwoods.

Mike was a mentor when I first started teaching. He was a friend. He was a good teacher and led an interesting discussion group at the Methodist church. We played handball together for many years. I will miss him

Mr. Galati was an excellent engaging person who always made us think and examine a subject from a number of perspectives. I remember him smiling more than other teachers which made me wonder what he knew that no one else did.

I got to visit a few times before he died. Conversations weren't easy, but we managed.
My last visit, though, he was much weaker. I didn't want to push him to talk if he couldn't. I figured that just being there with him was all right, too.
He puts a hand on the pillow next to his leg, but I wasn't sure what he wanted. "Is the pillow okay?" I asked him.
He whispers, "It functions."

Mr. Galati - I will always think of him as Mr. Galati - was my high school English teacher, debate coach, Great Books seminar leader, friend of my parents and much more. He had a greater impact on my life than any other teacher I ever had, in either college or law school. I feel this as a great loss, and if it is so for me, how much greater it must be for his family, particularly his children. They have all my sympathy.

What more can be said, than his obituary, and the wonderful remembrance that Nancy has added? Dr. Michael was a superb teacher, and mentor for so many!! Fondly...some called him 'Smilin Mike'. A wonderful guy...with an infectious smile. A true Lemont Icon, and pioneer. Our sympathy and prayers to his entire family!

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr Galati was an amazing man during my high school years. From English class to school counselor he was there for many of us students. He has left a great legacy within the school system and the town.

It is with much sadness that I viewed this obituary. Mr. Galati was one of my teachers at Lemont High and I also did some baby sitting for him and his wife. My deepest condolences to the rest of his family. (Class of '57 Alice Andrysiak)
