Richard C. Ramos Sr.
Age 87, at rest June 7, 2021 at his late residence. Son of the late Herman and Dorothy (Johannessen) Ramos. Loving husband to Joyce (Skeldon) Ramos (deceased) and treasured father to their five children.
Rich graduated from St. Joseph Grade School, Lockport High School, Joliet Junior College and from Lewis University in 1976 with a BA in Social Justice. He was a stand-out pitcher for Lockport and Joliet Junior College. Following graduation from JJC, he signed a professional baseball contract playing in the Chicago White Sox Organization for five years. Although he didn't make the "bigs", it was during this time that Rich and Joyce (who married in 1954) learned to love traveling, meeting new people and experiencing the beauty of our country. They were fortunate in life to travel to the 48 states and to make several trips abroad.
Rich held various security positions at Argonne National Laboratory, retiring as computer security manager after 34 years of service. Rich was a devout Catholic and active member of St. Dennis Church, serving for over 25 years as an officer of the Men's Club, lector, sacristan, volunteer gardener, painter, and general handyman whenever called upon. He was honored with the Distinguished Graduate Award from St. Joseph's Grade School, sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association. Other volunteer efforts included coaching Lockport Boys Baseball and Habitat for Humanity.
Rich was a "people person" who looked forward to morning coffee, reminiscing and solving world issues with his good friends at both Lockport McDonalds. He loved reading, metal detecting, tinkering at his workbench, studying the night sky, prospecting for gold in Colorado, feeding the birds and driving a different route home than the one he took to get there. Above all, Rich valued his family, faith, and friends.
He is survived by his five children; Rick (Denise), Beverly (Charles) Prodehl, Barbara (David) Stengele, Janet (deceased Michael) Lyons, and Diane (John) Meyer; grandchildren, Mallory (Justin) Sinner, Jordan (Brandon) Webb, Matt (Alexandra) Prodehl, Stacy (Robert) Szewczyk, Kathy (James) Brown, Jackie (Michael) Underwood, Brett (Lauren) Stengele, Patrick (Jennifer) Lyons, Megan Lyons, Kyle Petges, Christopher (Melissa fiancé) Petges, and John Meyer; great-grandchildren, Zoey and Charlie Prodehl, Sonia and Stas~ Szewczyk, Genevieve and Thomas Underwood, Benjamin and Juliana Sinner, Claire and Ellie Lyons and baby Stengele on the way; one sister, Sue (Lawrence) Grant and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceded by his wife, Joyce; his parents; and beloved grandson, Nicholas Meyer.
The family would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Sunnyhill Nursing Home of Will County for the wonderful care he was afforded there for the past 2 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Dennis Church Improvement Fund, Catholic Charities, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Per Rich's wishes cremation rites have been respectfully accorded.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dennis Church 1214 S. Hamilton St. Lockport, IL., 60441 on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 11:00am.
Visitation Saturday, June 12, 2021 in the O'Neil Funeral Home Chapel 1105 E. 9th, Lockport, Il 60441 from 8:30am until prayers at 10:30am.
